Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

Yes, you can do that. But, better still, run Tiny Transfer on the vintage Mac and run Tiny Transfer in Basilisk II on the modern Mac.

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

I agree. Despite the increase in size, BinHex 4 has stood the test of time! I was not aware of this. I'll download it and take a look. - David

Restoring a Retrospect DAT/DDS backup: Attempting to crack my own password

It's funny how the mind works. I think I was just too lazy to test my password cracking code, and my brain said "That's too much work -- here's the password."

Restoring a Retrospect DAT/DDS backup: Attempting to crack my own password

Back in 1992, I borrowed a DDS tape drive from my day job to back up all of my Macintosh hard drives at home. I stored the tape in a safe deposit box, until years later when it was relegated to the bottom of a storage box in the basement. Upon reviving my interest in Macs about five years ago, I...

Apple Developer Price Lists Oct 1991, Feb 1992, April 1992

Attached are PDF copies of the Apple suggested retail and developer discount prices for Apple II, Macintosh, AUX, Monitor, and Printer products circa 1991-1992. I was a developer at the time and I just recovered these documents from a tape backup. Example: M5510LL/B Macintosh IIfx 4MB 1FD CPU...

Color LCD Retrofit Kit for SE/30 by ZigZagJoe

What about ADB instead? Solder to the internal pads. Include a temperature monitor, fan controller, and brightness control. Edit: Additionally, this would work on any ADB Mac. And, other kits can be added to the ADB chain.

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

Lol. After I released Tiny Transfer, someone on the forum said "Hey! Did you know the serial ports can go faster?" So, I had that itch in the back of my mind. When I bought and upgraded the CSI Hurdler card, I knew I was going to have to code in the extra serial ports, but I then recalled the...

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

Ahh. That is much more practical. I did not previously notice the line "This member can be an actual baud rate value"

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

Welp, there's the problem. They are using 256000 baud because there doesn't seem to be a predefined CBR value for 230400 baud. I can't locate an answer online for generating the correct baud rate. And another problem that I noticed, 14400 is missing. This is an easy fix.

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

I broke out the oscilloscope to determine if something is wrong with Basilisk II. I believe there is. First, here is a Quadra 840av transmitting at 230400. The RS-422 voltage only swings from 4.4V to -4.5V. That's within Apple's specs. The width of two bits measures 8.760 microseconds. (It was...

    PicoMicroMac v2

I purchased one of @Ron's Computer Videos boards at VCFMW 20 from Joe's Computer Museum, inside one of Joe's 3D printed cases. It is really cute. Here are my notes: 1. I had to enlarge the hole in the 3D case for the mouse input. A lot of these 'on-the-go' cables have fat connectors. 2. One...

Faster Baud and More Serial Ports (CSI Hurdler, SerialDMA, QuadraLink)

I recently acquired a CSI Hurdler II NuBus card that adds serial ports to the Macintosh. Using the card and upgrading it sent me down a rabbit hole. When I received it, the CSI Hurdler indicated that it was a "dual" (HDS) serial port card, although it had all four ports soldered in place, along...

Macintosh LC with DGR Technologies Max Expansion

I was fortunate to pick up an uncommon upgrade for the pizza-box Macs: A DGR Max Expansion. This is similar to the MicroMac Power Workstation and the MicroQue LC Top Hat. It consists of a metal chassis that fits between the top and bottom of a stock LC case. The rear includes a second power...

Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

I assume the same message even with the serial port disconnected? I mean, I suspect this message is really saying "I can't talk to the Tecmar at all".

Tecmar Mac Drive (10 MB) A serial hard drive?! (The first Macintosh external hard drive)

Check the continuity on all of the serial cable pins. The MacGUI article indicates the drive clocks the serial port externally. Use a serial breakout board to verify communication. MacGUI said they had to leave the drive on for an hour for it to warm up and be recognized. Try disconnecting...

Manifested worries about the Y2K38 and Y2K40

Yes. No problem. As commonly occurs, whenever the PRAM battery has died or is removed, the date goes to 1904. That's exactly what will happen when the clock rolls over in 2040. The Mac works just fine. Yes. A number of people have put considerable thought into the subject. 1. Improving the...

HD20 Init for Mac II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30

Way back in 2008, @JDW pointed out the following article in which an unnamed init could enable a stock-ROM SE/30 to mount an HD20 hard drive (or Floppy EMU emulating an HD20). https://web.archive.org/web/20030303085358/https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=6182 "Additionally, we have...
