My two cents… The metal bracket of the SE board is mainly a mean for mechanical assembling. Of course, it has to be grounded, like the whole chassis. Pathways to ground are redundant by design. The conductive paint on the case is for electromagnetic shielding, surely not for grounding.

To my direct experience, the main issues with the Portable are the internal HD which invariably fails, and - more serious - the lcd panel that delaminates. The battery has to be maintained in working order for operating the machine, but can be easily rebuilt.
