First official C64 in 36 years

Yes, I mentioned that on the memorial page I created for Mr. Cheifet here: https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/stewart-cheifet-sept-24-1938-dec-28-2025.4937/

First official C64 in 36 years

In light of the recent passing of Computer Chronicles host, Stewart Cheifet, it’s perhaps fitting for this thread that I post the episode which focused exclusively on the Commodore 64:

Identifying this color classic analog mod (640x480 without cutting sense line?)

OK. J19 is cut in half, as you say. That only means the two pins on that part (transistor? something else? You'd need to read its P/N to find out) are NOT tied together. Fine and well. But it means this is true... Ignore that little red wire connected to pin20 at right because that's a...

Identifying this color classic analog mod (640x480 without cutting sense line?)

Here is the horizontally flipped version of your BROWN WIRE photo... And here is the component side (not flipped), perfectly matched to the above photo... Here are the two photos overlaid atop each other with the brown wire photo partially transparent so we can see the connections...

Identifying this color classic analog mod (640x480 without cutting sense line?)

There is no reason to boost the voltage to 68.4V like you have when using the stock motherboard. Yes, you can leave it that way by simple making screen adjustments via the analog twistable knobs on back but it’s generating more heat for no gain whatsoever. The voltage boost is only needed when...

Teaser: BurgerDisk, a Smartport SD hard drive, will soon be ready

Love the concept. But I’m going to be honest with you. If the 3-D printed case included with the product doesn’t look like a Big Mac or Whopper, I think there’s going to be massive disappointment. ;-) Seriously, having the ability to daisychain in a single hard drive product is great. 👏

    ATTO Silicon Express IV Nubus

According to the following discussion, ROM firmware v2.1 is required to make the card bootable: https://groups.google.com/g/1st-powermacs/c/x5lJf6yTCsM So which is faster? The FWB Jackhammer, or the Silicon Express IV?

    Stewart Cheifet, Sept. 24, 1938 ~ Dec. 28, 2025

While not a "community member" in terms of being into the retro scene, Stewart Cheifet contributed to our hobby in a very significant way. Cheifet is familiar to anyone who has ever watched the Computer Chronicles: The series aired on PBS (in the USA) from 1984 to 2002, and 460 episodes were...

    68kmla MIA

Exactly! You are just like me. I post something and then some hours later I find something I wrote that needs to be amended, and it’s usually a spelling error or maybe grammar. So I fix it. That topic is the other thing I was waiting silently to see if anyone would mention in this thread. I’m...

    68kmla MIA

LOL. I’ve been lurking silently in the background, reading the recent posts over the last 24 hours, just wondering when one of you was going to mention that. And I see you did! Honestly, it’s a good idea. I’m not on the board here at Tinker Different and therefore don’t have the authority to...

First official C64 in 36 years

I’ve been reading what other C64 Ultimate buyers have been saying, and apparently the Starlight and/or Founders edition(s) have a keyboard that flexes. Video here: https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=816529741416738 It’s not clear why that is. Some people say it’s because it’s transparent, while...

First official C64 in 36 years

My C64 Ultimate arrived today, and here are the unboxing pics... The print quality of the spiral-bound manual is very good and the following photo doesn't do it justice... My cassette case came cracked, despite having been shrink-wrapped. Probably done at the...

Identifying this color classic analog mod (640x480 without cutting sense line?)

The YELLOW wire in your photo shows it is the standard 68.4V VGA Mod (not the 84V 13" Hi-Rez Mod), and that is also shown below... I've never see anything like your BROWN wire though. Maybe @Kay K.M.Mods has seen it before?

    SE/30 Y3 Crystal Replacement Recommendation?

This will be my last reply until Will replies tomorrow. When you have no ground at all, you will often see ghost signals on a scope -- signals that aren't actually present at the point you're touching with the tip of the probe, but in fact are picked up from elsewhere. (60Hz, for example, is...

    SE/30 Y3 Crystal Replacement Recommendation?

Will is across the globe and already in bed, but he said he needs to do some testing tomorrow morning his time so he can reply to this thread then.

    SE/30 Y3 Crystal Replacement Recommendation?

When you watch that video I linked for you, ignore his use of a buffer and hex invertor. That isn't relevant. I merely linked it for you to show how shortening the GND lead worked wonders in cleaning up his measured waveforms. I can only say that lengthening a scope probe's GND lead should...

    COLOR CLASSIC LCD CONVERSION VIDEO!!

@nottomhanks The video all serious Color Classic owners have been waiting for! Thank you, Tom! The main reason I don't have the kit is because they ran out of that edition LCD at the time I was inquiring with the creator. And I've not heard back from them about their new kit, so I guess they...

    SE/30 Y3 Crystal Replacement Recommendation?

Adding a long green extension lead like that for Ground is a huge no-no when making HF measurements, but I must go further to say that your current black ground lead is still too long... In the video I linked for you, you will see the video creator shows he initially used the same black...

How the Macintosh Plus helped make Star Trek history! #VFX

Fantastic research and info, Ron! This needs to be shared with Star Trek sites to make it really take off. A little disappointing it was a Pee See that did the display creation, but not too surprising for the time. I remember vividly when I first saw the film, thinking to myself, that's not...
