    Dead G4 Cube

Check this thread for the disassembly and pinout. I had no problem powering a Cube or Dr. Bott DVIator with an HP/Dell 19v laptop PSU and a BUC converter to get it up to 28V. Make sure you are using at least a 150W laptop PSU.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 26-30 I was a little under the weather, so I didn't make a lot of progress. I picked up a $10 Project Dual G5 2.0GHz from Free Geek Minneapolis. I picked up some perf-board from Micro Center. I pulled a couple PWM fan headers from a donor broken PC motherboard. I did manage to solder...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Here is a thread on active cooling mods on an iMac G3.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

In years past, the PPC Challenge has always dragged on an extra week... keep posting!

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

An iMac G4 lamp? It can only go on one way with how short the monitor and drive cables are.... you should apply thermal paste between the dome and lower logic board where the two metal pieces align (small area near the center bottom in this photo).

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 23-25 Misc Stuff I ordered some drive belts, and they arrived, so I was able to piece back together the broken SCSI cdrom drive. I will install and test it this week in the 7100/66 which was upgraded to G3/250. I have reorganized my office too many times and stuff ends up in places I...

    Macintosh LCII failure

It is likely a cold solder joint. With thermal expansion, the connection gets broken. Lead free solder is usually the culprit, but I think these models pre-dated the lead free movement. Either way, you may need to reflow some solder joints with some leaded solder.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 22 I received my DSO-152 mini digital oscilloscope and had to watch a few online videos on how to properly use it. I connected to my G5 Quad with some needle probe adapters for my multimeter and the alligator clips on the DSO. Reading the Tach line pin 3 on the LCS. Running through...

    Mid-Budget Oscilloscopes: $150 - $325 Range +- Suggestions?

Well, for under $30, it seems to do what I need. I think I can decode what the pins are on the G5 Quad LCS. This is my first time using a scope, and first time interpreting my results. This is pin 5, which some claim is 5-12V input. I am going to call it 0-Vmax input, but a typical PWM fan...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 21 I received my DSO-152 from Temu and have yet to learn it. I set out to try to find the fan speed signaling on the G5Q. I was ramping up the temps by running benchmarks. I noticed my tubes were getting warm. They are not connected to the CPUs... but just having the motors run creates...

PCjr picture going a bit funny

Well, you have a couple routes to troubleshoot... is it the computer output or the monitor that is misbehaving? Do you have a 2nd computer or 2nd monitor you can connect to and see which is the culprit? From there, then you can troubleshoot the defective device.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 19 G5 Quad 2.5GHz again. I started out with no boot chime and no video. Overtemp? Well I put some water in a short tube and connected the LCS pumps just to have them connected to the logic board. They are not cooling anything. Powered on, water circulates, but still no love. They...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 17 I managed get the NewerTech MaxPower G3 into the 7100/66. I found the correct installer app at the Mac Repo to get the extension enabled. Before and after System Profiler. Speedometer 4.02 looks like about 5-6x improvement. MacBench 4.0, I will have to run further benchmarks, but it...

2009 Mac Pro 5,1 Odd Power Problem

Since you say if you leave a youtube playing it will not crash, I am guessing it has something to do with one of the sleep states of the CPU. I don't know the underlying issue or change that happened in Sequoia. My daily driver is an iMac12,2 and I have no issues except sleep. This is...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 17 I started with a 7300/200 and tried to install OSX 10.0 with XPostFacto, but got stuck on not having an HFS+ formatted volume. I couldn't find the Disk Utilities in the menu on 10.0, so will try another machine with a G3 in it. I then pulled out my 7100/66 and ran some standard...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Look for Apple Service Diagnostic CD... I think you want 2.5.8 or earlier... 2.6.3 is not for PPC. January 2003 – Apple Service Diagnostic Dual Boot CD v 2.1.5 – (ASD-215) PowerBook G4 (12-inch), PowerBook G4 (17-inch), iMac (17-inch 1GHz), Power Mac G4 (FW 800), Xserve (slot...

    Macintosh LCII failure

First photo, top right is part Y1, looks like the old mac classic oscillator. Photo 3 looks like two obvious oscillators. I donr’t have schematics, but maybe someone can point those out.

What is your impression of MorphOS? Not exactly linux but more Amiga like. And not free.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 15: Missed a few days Work has been long this week, so I haven't had the desire to get into anything when I get home in the evening. I pulled a few things out to look at this weekend. I remember back in the day when 10.0 beta came out... I had some PowerMac clone with a 604e and only 8MB...

    Macintosh LCII failure

Here is the cap kit from Console 5 for LC II / 400. $7 is pretty cheap.
