    Macintosh LCII failure

Based on these photos, I am going to suggest a thorough cleaning. Completely remove the motherboard and soak it in IPA and gently scrub with a toothbrush. No solder point on the board should be orange or brown, as lead does not rust. It is corrosion from something, most likely capacitor...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Did you verify the voltages and Amps are close on the replacement compared to the original one? Hope that is not a 5V fan running on 12V.

    Macintosh LCII failure

It is hard to tell with your pic, it is a little out of focus. Take a couple more close up shots of the capacitor farm on the bottom left and the upper left where it looks cloudy.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Yes, as it turns out I was confused. The single pump LCS I was working on is actually from the dual 2.5GHz that I converted to air last year. I thought it was the quad G5, because of the large metal plate on the bottom. But it does not line up with the G5 Quad... so looking at the dual pump...

VLC or HandBrake should be able to transcode to something DVD Studio 4 could handle?

    NOW UPGRADE THREAD - Power Macintosh G3 Beige Desktop – 266MHz (soon Buffalo G3 Accelerator 500MHz) – 224MB RAM – 6GB HDD – Mac OS 9, project

That is going to depend on how much VRAM you have in there. Lower resolution will give you more colors. It looks like 1024x768 is the max on that display according to EveryMac.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 11: G5 LCS woes I woke up in the middle of the night and went down a rabbit hole. I looked into cleaning solvents for radiators which lead me thinking about how to run it through. Well, pump of course. Which lead me to test the pump. Nothing. Which lead me down deeper. Disassembly of...

    Recap the CPU?

Looks like dust to me. Usually bad caps leave a residue on the green board, not the sides of the cans too much. Try some IsoPropyl Alcohol (IPA 91% or better) and a light toothbrush.

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 10 part 2 - more G5 I decided to tackle the LCS from the Quad G5. Warning: I am not a user (I am a Tinkerer). I removed the hose clamps. Since there was crust showing at some of the rubber to aluminum joints and I could not get the rubber to come off, I cut it off. Yuck! After...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

That is just case rust, no damage on the motherboard? Almost looks like a battery bomb. I love the Jenga pile from floor to ceiling. Good thing that case didn't rust more... You may want to put that side panel back on for vertical support of that stack!

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 10 so far... I dug around and found some spare parts for G5 towers (screws, drive sled, fans from the drive bay, etc). I Reinstalled the dual 2.3GHz processors in the Unit E (that was previously working fine, then crashed). MLB and CPUs passed. So trying to run the Thermal Calibration...

Power Mac G4 Power Supply (the notoriously loud AcBel 400W "Windtunnel")

The back can't always be trusted, as when Tinkerers do upgrades, they don't update the labels. I bought a G4 Cube and it unknowingly already has a 1.2GHz upgrade in it. And you can overclock these G4s with some soldering skills.

    G4 Quicksilver successful rescue

The pins in your photos do not move. The 4 screws hold the motherboard is a position that engages the pins. So in the 3rd picture, the motherboard should slide away from the back IO plate towards the Airport card, just about 1/8 of an inch. Then the motherboard will lift up off the frame. I...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Sony Mavica was my first real digital camera that was not a webcam. I had Canon film DSLRs and lots of lenses so when I migrated to digital, I kept with Canon because of the lenses. I collected quite a few before 2017 when I started chasing some Solar Eclipses (always went near the center in...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 7: Thanks for the memories! I stopped at Free Geek Minneapolis to have a gander. I picked up 4x1G PC3200U for my G5 units A & C, bringing them up to 4GB and 7GB. I also grabbed 4x2GB PC2-6400 for my G5 Quad, bringing that up to 11GB. I saw a $5 Sony Mavica CD1000 camera, one I have been...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 6: (we've only just begun) I ran the Thermal Calibration on the dual 1.8 Unit A last night and it failed. Swapped out a processor from the "flaky" B unit and ran the tcal again this morning with success! Also installed Panther 10.3 Both CPUs are recognized. Benchmarked with GB 2.20...

2026 PowerPC Challenge, is it happening?

Day 5: More G5 stuff. I decided to pull both CPUs from the B unit "flaky" and put them into the A unit. Booted and recognized dual processors! But... the exit fan was missing a blade and after a CPU swap it was in turbo fan mode. Luckily I have a couple spares I ordered since last year (see...
