SSD solution for iMac G4 17" (1.25 GHz)

So I am struggling mightily to get an SSD up and running in my 1.25 GHz 17" iMac G4. I had success with using one of the red Startech IDE-to-mSATA adapters in my 15", so I thought that the same thing might work here. But alas... The 17" model differs significantly in that it has two IDE...

    Passing of Bill Atkinson

One of Bill's final public appearances was at the Computer History Museum's Mac at 40 event panel just last year. I'm so glad he was able to make that event before his passing. Most definitely worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it previously.

    Managing your collections

This is looking really nice. I've been corresponding with Roland over email about this for a while, and it's shaping up to be my favorite of the available programs of this sort so far. Perhaps this will be the one that finally displaces the catalog spreadsheet! Below is the list of...

    Managing your collections

Agreed, this looks great @wottle . I would only ever want to use it on desktop so having the web app would be super useful.

    Managing your collections

I actually tried this out recently after hearing about it elsewhere. After discovering that use of the desktop app requires (1) using the mobile app first to unlock the "pro" tier; (2) a purchase fee for the unlimited items functionality, AND (3) a *paid subscription* for the desktop app, that...

Hobby workbench for vintage Mac studio

It's some form foil-backed fiberglass insulation, up against a concrete wall. The studio area is on the lowest floor of the house so it's always nice and cool down there, which I enjoy.

Hobby workbench for vintage Mac studio

For the first time in my 10+ years of tinkering, collecting, and working generally with vintage Macs, I finally have a proper workbench space. Woohoo! In the past I've resorted to doing cleaning, tinkering, and/or repairs (sometimes involving soldering, polishing, and other messy activities)...

    Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC

The original product page for the MoniSwitch ADC Pro indicates that the USB port is for connecting a USB keyboard/mouse if you're using a DVI-based display with it instead of an ADC display. The switch gets all its power from the ADC bus, as does the non-Pro model. I really like that about it...

    Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC

Very cool, sounds like the same concept as the "Pro" ADC model by Dr. Bott. Having DVI inputs instead of ADC would make it much easier to use with a mix of Macs and PCs. Yes, my understanding is that the 17" CRT uses only analog signaling over ADC; I haven't tried to use one of these switches...

    Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC

A neat side note, according to the original product page on Dr. Bott's website (Internet Archive link) this was actually used by Steve Jobs to demo OS X at various Macworld keynotes. Would certainly be useful in case like that where you're switching between computers on the fly.

    Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC

Just sharing some images of this neat little device I acquired recently, the Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC, which is a KVM switch that allows you to hook up two ADC-based Macs to a single display and switch between them at the press of a button. It also allows you to share any peripherals attached to...

Need hard drive replacement recommendations for Lombard 333

That's good to know, and it's consistent with my experience as well. I've used those 230S's in a number of my own machines and they have worked pretty much every time, for machines of G3-G4 era anyways. Anyways, will definitely second the recommendation of the green-board adapter and 230S for...

Need hard drive replacement recommendations for Lombard 333

Agreed that drives larger than 128 GB are just asking for trouble. And SATA adapters are the way to go based on my own experience. A CF-IDE adapter should also work. I was able to get a 64GB mSATA SSD working in my Lombard recently; links to the products I used are available at that link if...

    Managing your collections

I've been watching this thread with some curiosity, as I'd also love to have a more customizable/query-able solution for collection management. But I've been using Excel for this for many years and it's generally worked well enough when paired with my Photos library and my website. And is...

    Power Mac G4 MDD "FW800" 1.25GHz DP

Sharing a very nice recent find - this Power Mac G4 MDD. It is one of the early 2003 "FireWire 800" models, specifically the dual-processor 1.25 GHz machine. I purchased it from the original owner who had two of them in his design office. He took exceptionally good care of it; basically looks...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Very nice! That'll work indeed. I ended up sticking a 128GB mSATA SSD with one of the red StarTech PATA adapters into mine and that seems to be working well. Cheers to happy MDDs!

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Yes, it was very strange! If I hadn't found that fourth one I probably would have assumed a much more serious hardware issue. The models of drives that didn't work are: - Seagate U Series 5 model ST320413A (20 GB) - pull from iMac G3 - WD Caviar WD1200JB-00CRA1 (120 GB) - pull from another G4...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Thanks! Yeah, this probably would have been a good next step had all the drives ended up failing as I do have the original AHT disk. Cheers

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Interesting, yeah these HDDs are/were all era appropriate (pulled from various G3 and G4-based systems over the years). But anyways, I happened across a fourth drive that I had laying around ... figured "why not" and hooked it up ... and lo and behold, was able to get Leopard installed and...

Kernel panics, freezing, and general boot failure on Power Mac G4 MDD

Yes, booting from install media and that works fine. I also suspected it may be an SSD related issue, which is why I also tried it on several HDDs as well. Same result with those, which is why I'm stumped. Either way, would it also seem to you that it's a compatibility/software issue of some...
