Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Update/edit: I decided to throw the SSD and housing/adapter into my Key Lime iBook, and lo and behold the thing immediately worked perfectly. Installed OS 9 from CD and it boots right up. So, looks like the problem was either the 2.5"-3.5" adapter (which would be strange because it's just...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

OK, so after several more days of struggling (and slicing my hand open on the sharp case internals, lol) I've not had any further luck. Trying to boot off of both a 32GB and a 4GB partition yielded the same results (freezing at "Welcome to Mac OS" splash). So, I am going to chalk this up to...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Interesting, thanks for those links. I'm going to read through and dig a bit deeper tomorrow when I'm hopefully more rested up. Yes, at the beginning I tried partitioning to two 32GB partitions and that had no effect. I'll give the 4GB a try as well and see if that changes anything... I also...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Same result with that (copying files from HDD onto SSD plugged into optical slot). Yeah, if Slimes is right then it's an issue with the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, which sucks. Especially if 33MB/s is listed for the ATA to mSATA component. On the other hand, it seems the mSATA drive and ATA adapter...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Tried putting the SSD back in the ZIP drive bay, and it does not even attempt to boot there (just flashing "?"). I tried all the jumper options to no avail. I tried it several more times in the main bay, but it just froze at the Happy Mac each time. So, looks like this is just not going to...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

When powering up and holding down the left shift key, it only makes it to the Happy Mac icon and then the system freezes. Tried it 3 or 4 times. (Actually one time it made it to "Welcome to Mac OS - Extensions Disabled" and then froze). Put the HDD back in and it spun up just fine. Was back...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Got that swapped in, thanks for the tip. After figuring out the jumper settings I was able to copy the contents of the HDD onto the SSD, then swapped the SSD back in to the main bay and removed jumper. Now, it boots but I get to the "Welcome to Mac OS" splash and then the system freezes. None...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Yeah, was afraid it'd be difficult to troubleshoot. I don't currently have an extra IDE splitter cable to use but that is a good idea. The original HDD is currently not working (some days it does, some days it doesn't) so I'll see about picking up a splitter cable and trying that, assuming the...

Troubles reinstalling OS 8.5 on SSD in G3 B&W

Howdy folks, The original HDD in my G3 B&W has become somewhat unreliable so I decided it was time for an SSD upgrade. After considering various options I got this 64GB Transcend SSD, to put into this SSD to IDE adapter, and install using this 2.5" to 3.5" adapter. When booted from the...

I Got An M3 MacBook Pro; Obsolescence Forced My Hand

Right, that's what I am saying. The one-time purchase option for Office 2021 is not cloud-based. It's just a one-time purchase that you download and install; you can use it offline and there is no subscription fee or cloud nonsense. Unlike Photoshop (and other Adobe CC stuff) which forces the...

I Got An M3 MacBook Pro; Obsolescence Forced My Hand

FYI, it is still possible to get MS Office 2021 for Mac as a one-time purchase of $150. Although I also totally support using alternatives.

    iMac G3 speaker replacement success

Yeah, there are probably several replacement options available. These sound fine but not amazing, but I'm not sure how much of that is related to the original metal shields and magnets not being present on the backs anymore.

    iMac G3 speaker replacement success

Replacement of the iMac G3 internal speakers - I recently took on this project, which had been needing done for quite a while. Figured I'd document it here in case it is helpful to others in the future. My iMac's speakers had rotted out pretty badly; they sounded terrible and were falling...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Thanks - yeah, those were both things I tried (before I got it working) but we've since discovered that the problem all along may have been something unrelated: the extra pin on the SCSI header wasn't properly removed and was preventing the cable from seating fully, which may have been the...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Yes, that was one of the things I tried. I don't know if it's something wrong with my system, but I have never been able to get the Disk Jockey program to work properly - when I try to click "Create the Image", it just does nothing. It's almost like it's saving to the default location...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

I bought this BlueSCSI pre-built, so I spoke with the person who built it for me and they said it looks correct (these are "castellated" edges so this is normal in appearance for them). After *many* more hours of troubleshooting, I finally got the BlueSCSI to work. I was (due to my own...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Alrighty, so a few signs of progress but still no success yet: After a week of sitting, the PowerBook has now decided that it sees the BlueSCSI and will boot from it 🤷🏻‍♂️ I also got my hands on a proper set of 7.1 disks with the correct enabler. Attempting to format the BlueSCSI using Apple...

    May 2024 finds

Yeah, that's a nice system but is ~2-3x overpriced. Also looks like it's missing a lot of the components such as the angled VGA adapter, software CDs, and modem cable. Not to mention all of the documentation aside from the "about" booklet. If it had all those things it might be worth close to...

Someone actually made a RetroBright product, I guess it was inevitable

Yeah, this stuff has been around for a while (there are reviews on the Amazon listing going back to at least 2021). Seems to be effective based on what many of them say.
