An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Getting this iMac to work properly was kind of an ordeal. I even contacted Kay Koba from this forum for help. He offered me just the kind of positive vibes I needed. I ended up buying 3 junk ones in order to get 1 fully functional one that was 1.25GHz. Something about the hot Japanese summers...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Hey folks, I have been working to get my iMac G4 to a state where I could share it with everyone here, so please give me a moment to introduce いちご大福 (Ichigo Daifuku). When I was in high school, I was becoming so obsessed with Macs (mostly because of the promise of OS X). When the iMac G4 was...

iMac G5 ALS 20" Thermal Repair

I also just noticed in the service manual that there is also a hidden thermal contact on the back of the logic board. So I am not sure if you removed the whole logic board or not or just the heatsink that you can see when you open the computer. If you had not already removed the logic board, you...

iMac G5 ALS 20" Thermal Repair

Sorry, I don't have a solution to your problem. But I remember those iMac G5 ALS models as being so cool when I was a genius at the Apple Store way back in the day. So easy to open and repair everything. Of course, always the reason they failed was caps... even back in 2008-11 when I was doing...

    A very special Mac Portable

Totally! I usually hang out in the G4/G5 section here because those were my high school days. I recently got my dream high school set up, an iMac G4 17" 1.25 GHz and I maxed it out. I am having a blast. While the G4/G5 area of this forum is kind of quiet now, I am confident it will only get more...

    A very special Mac Portable

Thanks so much for the video. I'm relatively new to the retro Mac community... because when I started using Macs in 2001 they weren't retro, they were just old lol. But anyway, I wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and have watched several others. I like your approach and clarity and it is...

Tutorial: How to Develop Original iPhone Apps in 2025

I originally wrote this article as a followup on my article on how to get iPhone development working on PowerPC Macs like my iMacG4. But as I was writing it I realized, it had nothing to do with the host Mac and was all about the Original iPhone. So I changed the title and the focus a bit, and I...

Tutorial: Enabling iPhone Development for PowerPC Macs

Hey everyone, since I got my iMac G4, I have wanted to get a retro iPhone development workstation setup. While PPC Macs were never supported for iPhone development, I did see tutorial online for how to force install it. Like the one on Macintosh Garden / Repository. However, those were only the...

    Retrobrite for eMac

Yeah, I suspect this is a different issue that ends in similar results because these panels are clear plastic that are painted on the inside to create this effect. I don't have any advice but I would like to know how any attempts go. But if I remember correctly, modification of these types of...

    iMac G4 constantly crashing/kernel panics

@indigo_k glad to hear! I hope it keeps working!

    iMac G4 constantly crashing/kernel panics

Ok sounds good. Then my default guess would be RAM. But in OSX you should check the panic logs and see if you notice something different. You can use the Find command to look for "kext" and find the Kext closest to the top of the report that caused the crash. If it's always different then it's...

Apple Studio Display M7649 CCFL to LED conversion

@JDW oh, I have no idea. I hadn't even heard of the effect until you mentioned it. I saw that 20" iMac a while ago on yahoo auction and was really wondering what could cause that. I thought it was just liquid damage. But yeah, I guess it was stored in an extremely hot place for too long? But...

Apple Studio Display M7649 CCFL to LED conversion

Oh no, that’s terrible. Yeah I remember that 23”, it seemed impossibly big when I gawked at it in the Apple Store. Is the vinegar syndrome this effect?

    G4 Quicksilver successful rescue

My very first Mac was that exact same model (without the Zip drive). If I remember correctly the 733MHz model of quicksilver was an education only model. Because I was in high school at the time, I was able to buy it. It was bare bones but it was a Mac and it was beautiful. It came with Mac OS 9...

    iMac G4 constantly crashing/kernel panics

Oh yeah, and the other thing I forgot about is that if you did open the machine, did you reapply thermal paste to where the heat sink connect to the upper shell of the case? Or I guess, can you relate the timing to when the crashes started to right after you worked on it? Or was it months later?

    iMac G4 constantly crashing/kernel panics

its hard to say. Usually freezing like that sounds like a RAM issue. Especially if it's so consistent. When you said you maxed out the ram, did you max it to the unofficial max or the official max? But that would be the first thing I would go for is to remove half of the ram (like the user...

    Guide at Attempting First Recap

@Garrett thanks for the reply. Here are some photos of 1 of the boards. I am kind of wondering how to find the correct capacitors to order. And yeah, since these boards don't work, I don't mind if they continue to be broken.

    My very first NeXTStation

I googled it and that looks like a pretty sick retro laptop. That said, I think it's hard to beat the original Black hardware.... it beautiful inside and out... I wish I still had mine. And I never said a big congrats to @eric on getting his first black hardware set up and working! Big...
