Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

For the Atari stuff, I'm looking into FAT in my spare time so it's a possibility, but not right now (gotta stay focused!). The Amiga stuff is more alien to me and I never had one so that possibility is a bit more remote.

Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

Hi all, I've posted a quick preview of what's coming in the first post of this thread. I think it's pretty exciting :)

ThinkC [Study Group 1] Drawing on the Macintosh

It still does in the latest version of macOS. I've been using the same keyboard shortcuts for over 30 years and that's kind of amazing (and this works also from a Terminal window title, which is neat).

ThinkC [Study Group 1] Drawing on the Macintosh

RE the topic at hand: on page 52 of the Primer, the author mentions the Big Long Window Technique and discourages its use. If it has a name and is worth mentioning, there's probably a reason. Does anyone know what this technique was used for?

ThinkC [Study Group 1] Drawing on the Macintosh

Thing I never thought I would say #5413: Curse the interdimensional tapeworms! May they suffer an indigestion!

ThinkC [Study Group 1] Drawing on the Macintosh

Please tell me you have a whole book in your future. This is an exceptionally great explanation. I laughed. I cried. I felt things. And $DEITY knows I haven't felt much since they removed AFP sharing support in macOS.

[Idea] Macintosh 68k Programming Study Group?

Late to the party (story of my life), but this is a most excellent idea. Disk Jockey has made me reimplement stuff in Swift (device partitioning, HFS, resource and data forks, ...) but to access it all programmatically (as Bruce Horn and Steve Capps intended) is an extremely enticing prospect...

Mac OS 7.7a2 (Pre-release) archived on the garden

I haven't heard a peep in weeks. Last I checked, @zefrenchtoon had some issues with the disk images on his SD card but that was in June. I think Disk Jockey did its job (converting the .img into a device image) so if you feel like it, you can try replicating that step and see what happens.

I should put in a tip jar of some sort but I have more interesting features to build before that :)

Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

You absolutely can! In this very silly example (I hope the video works), I'm converting the disk image of the first installation disk of System 7.5.5 into a full-blown device. The steps are: 1. Drag the disk image to DJ's window. It will detect it as a Disk Copy image 2. Click the "Create a...

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm pretty old-school when it comes to your GitHubs and whatnots and it didn't cross my mind to use it for that purpose. I might open up Disk Jockey at some point, but right now it's a bit of a personal journey and I'd like to keep it that way. But the issue and...

Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

Thank you. I took on Disk Jockey as a personal challenge, to see how far I could take it (I had a few things I wanted to prove to the 15-year-old I was in the eighties :). I didn't look at the existing solutions but I'm sure there's good inspiration to get from them. By the way, I just released...

Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

Thanks! I'd love to add NDIF compatibility. However, it's a bit more tricky than the other formats, as it involves compression and relies on both the resource and the data fork (which makes it hard to handle on fork-less operating systems like we have these days). But it's on the to-do list!

Thank you so much for taking the time writing your feedback. After spending weeks working on this with little feedback (except from a select few in-the-know co-conspirators), it's thrilling to realize that this is actually helping people like yourself. And there's more coming :)

It never actually occurred to me that the sources for AppleCider were available. That's very interesting, thanks! I'll definitely take a look, but no promises that I'll ship anything! :)

Disk Jockey, a disk image file maker for your retro stuff - Beta for version 3!

That's an interesting idea! Currently, it creates an image the same size as the volume on the device you're extracting it from (not just a 2 GB one). So, yes, if it's a 2 GB volume that only contains a handful of small files, that's a lot of wasted space. The issue I'd face is that HFS can...
