Current Project: the Pumpkintosh (Live Stream - January 7 2022 - 8:00pm Eastern)

My latest crazy project is the Pumpkintosh - the Amber Screen Clear Case Mac/SE. But I did even more. Yessir. Orange "Chip-On-Board-On-A-Strip" 12 volt LED segments, wired together into the Mac's power supply. This thing looks like a million bucks. Gonna do a livestream showing how I got...

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Can they provide a small sample spool first (250g?) so we can do a couple test prints for matching? Do they certify that their Pantone match is to the final printed item?

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

We have a Pantone and RAL nearly exact match. So if we stick with one of those standards, we'll be okay.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Yeah, I can sell 'em on my store.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

That's nifty! If they can do RGB color codes, my color matching (over five items, each item sampled five times then averaged) indicates that the closest match is #BFBCB1.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

PETG BAYBEEE! Ahem. Seriously, though, the company has a few PETG filaments, but I'm not sure they do color matching on that. https://colorfabb.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=PETG

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

I placed an order for 1 750g spool. I'll take the hit on the first one to see if the color is close enough. The upside, is the company I found isn't like the first one - you can just order whenever you like, minimum order 1 spool. WOOT.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

I have a positive color match on PLA. I have a spool on order to Ohio from Europe.

Help diagnosing a Color Classic Analog board

Yeah. Waiting on it to arrive.

Help diagnosing a Color Classic Analog board

Update again: it's the board edge connector. Machine started flaking again. I got angry, so I removed the a-board, reflowed EVERYTHING, and reinstalled. Now, the screen doesn't flicker, but it's blue. If I "jiggle" the a-board, the screen flickers, gets color back, etc. Now, I get to...

One would think. But now it doesn't. It's just.... fine. 🤷

Help diagnosing a Color Classic Analog board

While waiting for Deoxit to arrive, I removed the analog board again, reflowed every joint I touched, and even a few I didn't. This made no difference. So, I took a black nylon stick and started poking stuff (non-conductive, ya know, for safety and stuff). Lo and behold: I poked one of the...

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

I have ordered a relatively inexpensive color matching meter. I'm going to take direct measurements of known colors, do some averaging (if I get different results on multiple tests), and re-compare. I'm not 100% sold on 400c. It's close, but.... not quite. This will also allow me to match...

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Yup! That's what I thought too. So I ordered some filament colored 421 C (someone had some) and it's just too cold. https://www.pantone.com/connect/421-C https://www.pantone.com/connect/400-C I sanded to remove any surface yellowing. I used 220, 400, 800, 1600 to ensure that specular...

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Actually, it's 400 C. 421 is a cool grey with a lower gamma. 400 C is warm and so nearly right, it's magic.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Well, the cost is probably the same as the Platinum filament. I'll know once I hear back from the vendor. They sure are taking their time. Might have to @ them on Twitter or something.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

Update: 2/1/2022 - I would stay away from the Extrudr filament. It's too light, and might be a bit too cool as well. Update: 1/31/2022 - Looks like I'll have the Extrudr filament today. Hmmmm. ;) UPDATE: 1/19/2022 - we have a potentially less expensive match...

Help diagnosing a Color Classic Analog board

This was exactly the problem: missing solder on a resistor. To be fair, I didn't do that: the owner did and I missed it three times. Now the CRT has brightness flicker problems, but that's probably just bad caps under the cage (i.e. the ones that don't normally get replaced). Thank you very...

Help diagnosing a Color Classic Analog board

Thank you for the help. My recording equipment isn't as fancy as you think it is. ;) In addition, I can't run this machine for more than a couple of seconds, as I'm afraid it's pushing crazy voltages and is going to fry something. I have already checked the analog board with a magnifying glass...
