The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

I went and found my molex power connector to feed 5v to these devices, BlueSCSI first. It booted right up, no screen blanking! Next up SCSI2SD, it took longer than normal to boot and still had screen blanking. I have this monitor (Digital Doc 5) from my PC overclocking days...back in the late...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Curiouser and curiouser! 🤔 Attached the BlueSCSI and no screen blanking, but it hangs at boot unless I don't load extensions. More experiments to come...don't touch that dial! 😏

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Very interesting...as Arte Johnson would say ( gawd I'm old 😳😄)! You got me thinking. I use a v5.2 SCSI2SD now, have used v1.1a BlueSCSI, neither exhibited this behavior prior to recap...as I have said. Anyway, I disconnected it. Guess what? No screen blanking! Seemed to take an inordinately...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

So, the recap was successful, but, not without some drama! First, I'll reiterate that I have Kay Koba's Spicy O'clock installed, which calls for a MC88196DW70 or MC88196DW80 installed, not the MC88920 in a stock LC475. I have been able to get to just over 39mhz with this combo. It wasn't...

Well, took the board out and back to the bench and....no more continuity! But I did find a blob of solder over by another cap. Where did that come from?!!! I cleaned and cleaned and never saw it. Anyway, whatever that may have been doing, it acts the same, working correctly to all appearances...

@rikerjoe You got it! C105 checks shorted...dangit. I felt fortunate to get C36 desoldered and flipped around...and it's much more accessible. Will this have damaged the capacitor? Since I ordered a kit, I have no replacement.

Thanks! I triple checked polarity, especially after noticing one I had backwards immediately after soldering the 2nd side. I did not check for shorts though, so I'll do that!

Okay, I performed my 1st (and probably last) ever recap today, on my LC475. The machine still works...this is good! But, I did not expect my overclock performance to drop. I still don't have my MC88196DW80 chips (ordered 2), so perhaps when that is swapped, I'll be able to get back on track...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Well, that was exciting! 😳🤣 I just finished removing the caps from the logic board...with a hot air rework station....even though I had watched numerous videos...I was not prepared! Now I know why people do twist and pull! The stink doesn't help, neither does the too close plastic parts...small...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

So today I recapped my power supply, it even worked after I was finished! But before I did that, I ran benchmarks. The first two images show results from MacBench 1.0. I ran it because it includes more 68k results. While it did not have an LC475 or Q605, I used the Q700, which is at least a...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Hi _SDGOL_, Yes, BlueSCSI is wonderfully easy to setup/manage but I'm on a bit of a speed kick here and I think I'm about to the point where I'm not going to be adding alot more software...I think 🙄. I saw there was an update, but that requires some extra bit of hardware, doesn't it? I will...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Well, I spent a couple of hours today, reading up on how to setup multiple devices on a SCSI2SD and use an emulator, 'dd' and Balena Etcher to setup your files. This still defeats me. It's easy enough to configure the card using the SCSI2SD utility, but when I tried to go to my LC475, to...

The Adventures of a Timid Tinkerer aka LC475 upgrades

Timid is perhaps unfair, but not wholly so...in any case, I've decided to start a new thread to recount my experiences in performing upgrades to my LC475. First some history. I'm not perhaps the typical Mac enthusiast, starting my computing journey back in 1985 with a C64. I used Commodore 8...

Yes, more results from more machines would be great. There are so many variables, I'm not sure any individual, certainly not myself, could really determine the root causes of any specific result. I would really like to see results that use BlueSCSI, since this result was unexpected. Perhaps I...

When my car wouldn't start this morning, I accelerated my testing schedule, while I wait for the battery to charge. :( I decided to see where the ceiling was on my LC475 with the MC88920 still installed. I started at around 1.72K ohms. Running OS 8.1, it got past RAM check and started to boot...

 Boy, this is fiddly! Tiny components (R93!), tight spaces (connecting Vcc and ground on the logic board component), fragile case plastic (broke a tab, removing the logic board), broke it again re-seating the logic board, broke the other fan clip re-installing the fan...good thing I...

One more day (less actually) won't kill me, right? 🥴 My Spicy O'clock came today, but by the time I investigated the cause of my dog's 'high intensity' home defense mode, I missed 😱 the delivery person who needed a signature, if only I had known! Well, I scheduled for a pickup tomorrow...I try...

Would work, with tape. I have a couple of options in hand already, one I think would fit, another I'm sure would, as the heatsink has a recessed area for the fan to sit in. Until I successfully get my machine running >33mhz, I won't really know how much a fan might be needed. At 33mhz, fanless...

I don't know...personally, I would find what a 'transplanted' American living in Japan, eats for breakfast interesting 😄, but that's me. I would also vote to keep content versus removing...there is the FF button, especially if you use 'chapters'. As far as Bus errors go, with my admittedly...

That wasn't too bad for a first try (with a heat gun). Actually, I did the chip that I did the leg lift method, which I had re-soldered on first....but that doesn't count, as it was rework of rework! I still have one more similarly sized chip to remove, then I will do more practice resoldering...
