    Tinker Different 2024 Calendar Competition

It's time to get out your cameras and your favourite piece of vintage kit and submit your photo entry into the Tinker Different 2024 calendar competition. It doesn't have to be a computer, it might be a game console, a boom box, a camera, a car or a television. It just needs to be vintage. Just...

    Quadra 840AV - chimes ... kinda ...

The 840AV is a nightmare and I hate working on them. They have tiny little traces with a weak point just as the trace becomes a pad under a component. I have worked on 840AVs that look pristine, only to find dozens of broken traces around and under components. I can't say I've ever experienced...

I checked Mu0n, your comment isn’t there. Not in “held for review”, not in published. As far as YouTube is concerned, it doesn’t exist.

Mac Classic II won't start, instead purrs

I keep a supply of optocouplers on hand and replace them on every Classic and Classic II that comes my way these days. They fail a lot.

Solicitation to be considered for the TinkerDifferent Board of Directors

Hi all, my name is Bruce Rayne from Branchus Creations. I am one of the founding members of Tinker Different and have been keeping the President's seat warm for the past 12 months. I was extremely humbled to have been voted as the president of the first Tinker Different board. I would like to...

    Dark mode vs. Light mode

This behaviour is also observable in the dark mode theme, and for now I think it'll have to be something people just learn to live with. It's certainly not a quick fix.

Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.

The Tinker Different Board of Directors has provided the following response to the recent posting and subsequent comments by Mr. Fahrenheit: The founding of Tinker Different was a monumental process. Our many founders, including Mr. Fahrenheit, worked tirelessly to define all aspects of its...

    2022 PowerPC Challenge!

Even though we call it the PowerPC challenge, we do welcome earlier Macs as well. In 2021 we actually called it the "68k & PPC Challenge" but decided it was too much of a mouthful and returned to the original name. We welcome your participation in the 2023 event.

    Reinforce case tabs

My apologies @JDW but I've never had an HD20 in my hands before, so I wouldn't have a clue!

How To Test Macintosh IIsi Logic Board

A couple of things to keep in mind. Has any of the UV mask been scraped away from the bottom of the power supply PCB by accident? A situation can arise where the metal case can come in contact with exposed traces and potentially cause fuses to blow. Also, the IIsi uses the same power supply...

Just ordered a Quadra 950, any known caveats or advice?

The logic board of the Q950 is usually pretty safe. No surface mount electrolytic caps, so no recapping needed there. I have heard the the power supplies are prone to issues, so you may need to investigate recapping the power supply at some time in the future. For now though, I'd say that it...

iivi No Chime, No Video, Recapped and working Power supply….Help?

Has it had a really good clean after recapping? This is my generic checklist that I always follow if a board doesn't work after recapping. It's all pretty obvious stuff, but still good to go through. Is it clean? Check your work (correct components, polarity etc.) Check for accidental shorts...

Can I ask whether it worked before recapping? And who did the recapping?

Troubleshooting SE/30 garbled screen, no chime before and after recap

In order to get an accurate measurement of a capacitor, it can't be tested in-circuit. It needs to be removed from the board first. However, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that those axial caps are not the problem. I agree with @Elemenoh that replacing those Ux8 chips on the board is...

Macintosh LC 475 ..... need a little help

I'm pretty sure Formac was a European company that made display cards, so I'm wondering if this somehow expanded the display capabilities of the LC475? It's the "21" on the end of the product code that's making me think along those lines. Maybe it allowed display to a 21" monitor? Just guessing.

FileMaker Pro IWP (database publishing on the web)

I was thinking that myself. Maybe even a database plug-in added to WordPress could do the trick.
