Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I see, very interesting! :) I only have FW A and FW B units, so sadly FW C is something I can't test. However, I'm curious, QP10 works and gives this flags every once in a while. I wonder if it's calling out that there's a delay between the capture and writing to the SD card? I suppose small...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Yeah, here are two near identical recordings. The one with my standard modded firmware (Movie 20) versus the QP10 (Movie 17): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xizA1qN5kcgCmOA1dha1xsCl_uJeyLq2?usp=sharing Note: Due to the firmware being uploaded, these are set at the default picture...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

FYI - QP10 works, but QP5, after a few moments, gives the same "ERROR!" calls in the serial monitor. It will save a file to the SD card, but it doesn't do it properly so it won't open with VLC or QuickTime. I'll do some recordings of my regular firmware and the QP10 for direct comparisons and...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Thanks! For my model A, it now successfully flashes. But while it does try to record, and the device gives no clear errors (it even says a movie file name when you press stop) - it seems the files don't save on the SD card. Here's the readout from the console which may provide some clues, I...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

That may be it? Feel free to try using the Java version. Or direct message me the file before it gets compressed and I’ll try it with the Java app to see if it has a different result.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I'll try it on my model with the serial adapter to get a better understanding of where it's failing.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Thanks Joe, I'll try these now. I assume 0 is max quality? EDIT: I tried the QP0/QP10/QP15 on my B model and it starts flashing the firmware... but it never finishes. The screen stays black and it seems to never flash. As removing the power and SD card makes it boot normally. Also - if you...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I'd be happy to try it. But can you do the same changes to the "Firmware B" file? I do not have a unit that is compatible with "C" revision firmware.

You two are smart - thanks for your contributions! :)

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Thank you. Can you explain what you did to modify the firmware? Since you don't have a Kodak unit to test this on, I'm very curious of the changes you may have done. Was it just to the resolution / bit rates? Because I've tried higher bit rates and it will crash during the recording process...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Yep! The images are certainly able to be modified. Attached is an example of me putting my logo on a screen. It's funny that all the menu options are actually images - you think it would be easier to build it with text for multiple languages... As far as the white balance and exposure - yes...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I'd like to share a special preview of my Kodak 8mm Reels video saga. This is only half of the video, and not all the shots and bits are complete. But I wanted to share it because I show and discuss the sharpness settings and the results of them. Later in the video I go into the resolution...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

That's a good idea, however it would requite quite a bit of modification due to the way the camera and plastics are seated. Furthermore, I think when you are zooming the image via the menu it just performs a crop. I don't think it's performing any digital zoom. I've confirmed this (in my eyes...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Thanks for sharing your examples! Great work - I'm glad you were successful in your mod. And yes (at least in my tests) it doesn't seem you get too much of a quality increase if you go beyond a certain bitrate. However, it certainly improves things and reduces compression artifacts from the...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Yes, sadly the "About" screen is pretty useless. It has only displayed 1.0 (in very early units) and now displays 2.0. Externally the only difference is the number on the serial number sticker, and perhaps the LCD hardware inside the device. It appears (assuming the serial numbers are going...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I'm currently working on a video about this whole saga, including new comparison videos, etc. But in that process I'm re-scanning some film with higher settings. I thought I'd share an example. You can sadly see that the auto exposure and white balance put a blue tint to the opening shot here...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Here's a capture of a black and white New York City promotional film from 1956. This was captured with the 1440x1920 @ 12,600 kbps option. The first few min of the film were zoomed out, but I corrected that after. It didn't come out too bad for being a mass produced copy.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Great! With the serial wires soldered to the UART adapter, I can see options for auto exposure and auto white balance. However, I have been unable to figure out how, or if, these settings can be toggled or modified during the usage of the projector. Here's a list of the serial monitor controls...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Sorry, I got delayed. Here are two versions of the firmware for "C" versions of the Kodak reels hardware. One has the 1920x1440 resolution and a bitrate of 12,600 The other uses the original resolution, but a higher bitrate of 12,600.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Great news!! Thanks to the great efforts of @wnt2fly - we now have a fix for users who were experiencing weird screen issues! This firmware file should solve those problems, 🥳 It seems any model with a serial number that begins with H2324148BK.....has some different hardware inside which...
