    Macintosh Portable horror story

Hello, thanks for the kind offer. I am based in Japan (Nagoya), so it would indeed make little sense shipping from US. I will buy it from AliExpress, it’s indeed cheap. Thanks again!

Well done! If you still have too much tubing around, I will be glad to purchase part of it.

When Was The Last Time You Dumpster Dove? :)

Many years ago I pulled a bunch of Apple II GS out of a flooded container at a recycling site. They were dismissed machines from a nearby US military base. I literally bought them by the weight. Amazingly enough, though, they were all still in working conditions, despite the water and the rust...

Macintosh Portable: "pop" noise every 10s from Speaker & Headphones

So, I took the opportunity "kindly" offered by the ugly weather here in Aichi for playing around a bit with my Portable and vintage audio system. I can confirm the headphone output is dead quiet, regardless of the output volume level. Totally equivalent to my “modern” MacPro. As for the...

Macintosh Portable: "pop" noise every 10s from Speaker & Headphones

Guess what? The battery in my Portable is totally floored, it will take many hours before it gets back to a decent voltage. Anyhow, it will be a good opportunity for getting out of the closet some vintage recording equipment, too...

Macintosh Portable: "pop" noise every 10s from Speaker & Headphones

Unfortunately, I am not exactly the best guy to refer to when it comes to “hearing” something, but I will give my best shot at it. I need to get my Portable out of the closet, will see what I can do.

Macintosh Portable: "pop" noise every 10s from Speaker & Headphones

I don’t have this issue on my non backlit Portable. Or maybe I never noticed it.

Any interest in NEW Repro Lombard / Pismo battery packs?

I opened this one a few days ago. First one I did, took me ten minutes. I started from the corner next to the logic board. All the rest came off quite easily, just by wiggling and pulling the two shells apart using a couple of plastic tools. There’s no glue in the seam. There are two latches in...

Any interest in NEW Repro Lombard / Pismo battery packs?

The TiBook battery can be easily opened with just a plastic wedge, the case is indeed flimsy and kept together only by a few glue spots.

    PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI

Hi All, I recently scored a wonderful PB Ti 1 GHz, top specs (1 GHz, Radeon 64), complete with everything, down to the plastic wraps. I am glad I could reacquaint with this ultra-cool machine, as it reminds me of when I was (well… twenty years) younger and I used to own a wonderful 667 DVI...

macintosh plus video issue that i think i definitely know the cause of

Caps are unlikely the issue. I have also bad experience with cold solder joint cracks: hard to catch by naked eye, but they are there.

Is it just the picture or the Astec at the bottom looks partially charred?

Making a replacement Hinge for a 15" Studio Display

So, 3D printed. It will look a little coarse, you will have to finish the part by hand, but it should do the job. Looking forward to seeing the final result.

Making a replacement Hinge for a 15" Studio Display

Is it machined from billet, cast or 3D printed? In the past I was considering maybe running a small series of machined parts, out of brass or aluminium…

Freshly Recapped Portable - RAM Faults

Could you please share the link to the rollers spare set? I was planning to tackle that issue on my own, by casting or turning something, but if the solution is already out there it makes no sense… Thanks!

Urgent help needed for my Powerbook 170!!!

There’s no real fix. At best, you can get some temporary improvement. Those screens were technically flawed, in the sense that they were not built to survive the long term environmental aging. Chemicals such as glues irreversibility deteriorates. I got some kind of improvement with my unit by...

    Favorite commercially available coffee?

”Coffee”… I can only speak for coffee to taste and savour, not for coffee to drink, as in Italy there’s only “espresso”… and a thousand of variants! Illy is my favorite commercial brand, many blends available, including for long coffee. Anyhow, recently I have been forced to switch to a...

    Ode to the PowerBook 100

I have a soft spot for the Portable and for the 100, too. Built by Sony, as far as I remember, which at the time was the absolute master of miniaturization, in mechanics and electronics (some of the most epic devices from Sony were released in the early 90s…). However, it is true that the 100 is...
