Mac SE video output compressed vertically (not tall enough / skipping rows)

The pins have dovetail latches. Either use an extractor, or with a needle gently bend each latch inward. You will have to bend them outward again and to restore the dovetail shape before inserting them back into the new connector body.

m5126 does not want system 7

For the keys, it’s likely a matter of thoroughly cleaning the inner contacts: desoldering, disassembling and cleaning each single switch. As for the OS, 4 Mb are sufficient for installing OS 7, hard to tell why you are not able to install it.

    BlueSCSI v2 - DaynaPORT WiFi!

One thing that I noticed after doing some testing. As long as I connect to a remote FTP server (for example, an SE30 running Netpresenz) everything works fine. I can get and put files. However, switching parts would also be an interesting proposition. So, I installed Netpresenz on the...

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Another timeless classic. Built like a tank, drives like a tank :-)

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

To my judgement and experience, this is one of BMW’s finest interiors. I’ve driven one for many years and enjoyed every moment. Buttons, knobs, dials, but also digital screens blending seamlessly with the instruments. But maybe it’s just me getting too old.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Agree, my family has one too, and it’s a very fine and well thought interior. Still, put an old person behind the wheel and the judgement will be different. Ea h function should never be more than 3 “clicks” away, but it’s seldom the case. With physical buttons, each function is one action away.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Bad news on the way… Fresh from Autocar magazine’s web site. Mid life update Tesla 3 just got rid of the steering wheel stalks. Fog lights are gone, too. Good job, guys, some 50 bucks in production costs spared. And BMW’s horrific “Neue Klasse” concept interior is yet another copycat of Tesla: a...

    BlueSCSI v2 - DaynaPORT WiFi!

Amazing job, guys, thanks for making it available to the vintage Mac community! Today I took out my v2.0 and swapped the Pico with a Pico-W. One hour later I had my Mac Portable 7.1.1 on line. Just unbelievable. Only remark: the MacTCP version on the provided disk image refused to work...

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Car industry is one of the most conservative ever: requiring huge expenditures and investments, running on meagre margins, it’s totally cost driven. The touch panel-based UX craziness stemmed from Tesla, who managed to sell impossibly spartan interiors for the epitome of coolness (some sort of...

Printing to ImageWriter II from MacBook Pro

Can't answer this one, but you will pardon me if I use this thread for dropping one question: where to source reasonably priced pin feed paper, the nice, old fashioned one with stripes? Couldn't find much even on Amazon...

68k MFS: sector by sector hex dump

Thanks for the insight. My goal would be to have everything done on one 68k Mac, preferably a plain 68000. I’m only missing something that can take binary and convert to “hex text”, byte by byte. If nothing pop ups, could be a funny project for reviving my acquaintance with Think Pascal.

68k MFS: sector by sector hex dump

Disk images are binary dump… in disk image format, so there’s some overhead on top of the original disk data. Eventually, I found out that Fedit can open and save each sector individually. What I am missing is some early 68k tool which can take hex and save as string equivalent, in a way data...

68k MFS: sector by sector hex dump

Hi guys, bad weather out there, some time to squander... Long story short: I decided to start deep diving into MFS, which is very basic and sufficiently document in the Inside Mac and in the manual of the rather excellent Fedit software. Because... Why not? Beside Fedit, the Norton Disk Editor...

GOTCHAS when buying a Macintosh Portable?

I’ve had 3 Portables, all non back lit (if you like oddballs, go all the way…). Sold one for ridiculously cheap money a long time ago, still have two. One dormant, one in full efficiency. You surely need to rebuild the battery, recap the motherboard and replace the Conner drive. The trackball...

    BlueSCSI on Macintosh Portable

Just for the record, I have a 4 Mb RAM expansion, for a total of 5 Mb. ROM version $037A.

Copying legacy software from internet repositories to 68k Macs

In theory it is like you describe, but my sometimes the disk is not automatically mounted, even if it’s marked “auto mount”. Maybe some conflict with some other SCSI device or whatever. (All in all, though, I must say it’s a mystery to me how the MO format could not reach the deserved...

    BlueSCSI on Macintosh Portable

I suspect your machine is trying to balance performance and battery life. I have "max performance" as default setting.

Copying legacy software from internet repositories to 68k Macs

So, today I had some spare time and took out of the closet one of my Cubes. I plugged a MO drive via USB and formatted the disk (230 Mb) in HFS. Using OS 9 and the web browser Classilla, I had a very smooth browsing experience on macintosh garden. Once downloaded, using StuffIt Expander 6.0 I...

    BlueSCSI on Macintosh Portable

I did some tests and I confirm I cannot reproduce the pattern you see (before/after sleep). Before / after has no impact and for some reasons I also get better scores than you get.
