Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Alrighty, so a few signs of progress but still no success yet: After a week of sitting, the PowerBook has now decided that it sees the BlueSCSI and will boot from it 🤷🏻‍♂️ I also got my hands on a proper set of 7.1 disks with the correct enabler. Attempting to format the BlueSCSI using Apple...

    May 2024 finds

Yeah, that's a nice system but is ~2-3x overpriced. Also looks like it's missing a lot of the components such as the angled VGA adapter, software CDs, and modem cable. Not to mention all of the documentation aside from the "about" booklet. If it had all those things it might be worth close to...

Someone actually made a RetroBright product, I guess it was inevitable

Yeah, this stuff has been around for a while (there are reviews on the Amazon listing going back to at least 2021). Seems to be effective based on what many of them say.

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Right, I guess that's what I'm saying - I was confused as to why these disks would be sold if they're useless, because I hadn't realized I was working with a ~special~ system that requires a particular enabler. My confusion likely stemmed from the fact that this is the *opposite* of how later...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Yeah, I discovered it is System Enabler 131. Apparently the 165c is one of a select few 'oddball' machines that requires this under 7.1, as usually you can just use a "standard" installer with most other 1xx series machines. I've been wondering how/why someone would be selling install disks...

    Hi from Minnesota

Beautiful Cube setup! Almost exactly the same as my own. Might be my favorite computer design of all time (either that or the iMac G4). It is indeed sad to think about how much of this vintage tech was lost during the '90s and 2000s ... so many stories of compact Macs, Lisas, NeXT etc. being...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Ok, so I've spent several hours trying to get this to work but unfortunately haven't had much luck. After putting the .iso onto the SD card in the BlueSCSI, the machine does not recognize it and I can't figure out a way to get it to boot from the device. I've probably disassembled and...

Thanks .. am going to give this a shot tomorrow, appreciate the advice!

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Thanks for the advice. I'd also much prefer the second route. I've got the .iso zip file downloaded; is there any special naming to make it show up as a virtual CD-ROM off the SD card?

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Using some installer floppies I got a while back for it, I think from here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/353378805901 Is it possible to get the system enabler for the 165c (.bin file?) to the floppies somehow? Or are they just useless with this particular machine...

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Recently I finally went ahead and got a BlueSCSI for my PB 165c, which is currently still running its original 120MB HDD with System 7.1 installed. I decided to try reinstalling that version since (a) that was what shipped on this machine originally, (b) it's what is installed on the HDD...

    Member Intro - Grant (mac27)

Greetings all, I've already made a couple of posts/comments here, but figured I should introduce myself! My name is Grant, and I'm a retro Mac collector based on the East Coast of the USA. I am the owner/curator of the mac27 collection, which focuses on the later PowerPC (G3-G5, 1998-2005)...

Need Advice: What's A Good After-Market Battery For A Clamshell iBook?

AFAIK there are not modern replacements available for purchase (someone please correct me if there's a source I'm not aware of). You could try to rebuild it yourself with replacement cells, but that is a 'project'.

Melted (?) chip in Power Mac G4 MDD SuperDrive

I'd agree with that, since there is no other damage inside the drive. Also seems to be consistent with the current (dead) state of the unit. New drive has been ordered so hopefully problem solved...

Melted (?) chip in Power Mac G4 MDD SuperDrive

Interesting, thanks. Doesn't seem like that would totally kill the drive but maybe it's at least part of the problem.

Melted (?) chip in Power Mac G4 MDD SuperDrive

Working on a SuperDrive that has no signs of life whatsoever, pulled from a G4 MDD. I confirmed it is receiving the proper voltages from the PSU. After pulling it apart, there is one IC (pictured here) that looks as if it's burned/melted. Quite odd, as everything else inside the drive looks...

Need Advice-What To Look Out For When Hunting For A Clamshell iBook

Aside from occasional and sporadic issues with the motherboard/display/trackpad etc., these machines actually seem to be on the more reliable side if they have not experienced major damage (e.g., drop/fall) and have been stored in hospitable conditions. The original hard drives are the most...

    PowerBook 3400 Retail Box

Great shots, thanks for sharing. My recollection is that they kept a similar design for the G3 Kanga packaging, before switching to the much-cleaner green/white aesthetic for the Wallstreet (the earliest PBG3 box I have). I dig the vibe.

TAM Power supply internal picture request.

It's several months later, but here are some photos of the main board assembly from my TAM PSU. I am certain that I was the first person to ever open it. It is working normally (I recently opened it up for a preventative recap). By "blue and pink wire", do you mean a single wire that is both...
