Hi all, thanks for allowing me to join the forum.

I have two Color Classics - both Euro units - which I have recapped. One of the CCs has always had an unstable image. By unstable, I mean it generally looks okay but may flicker and change geometry momentarily from time to time. It also looks slightly burnt out, and retrace lines just visible at times.

I have checked for dry joints and excess heat damage on the AB. Just the usual heat marks. Visually, I can't see any issues when compared to my good unit. I did wonder whether some pots were failing or 'scratchy', and while they've seen better days, I'm pretty sure they are not the cause.

My current suspect is the B+ voltage - it's about 68v on the CC with unstable picture, whereas the good unit showed 60v. I guess I can adjust PP1, but it feels like a workaround rather than addressing the root cause. It seems impossible to adjust while the unit is running anyway, so getting it right could be a long process (and potentially damaging!)

Any ideas appreciated.

letiss.

Happy new year!

I have just replaced the two zener diodes DL21 and DL22 and it appears to have solved the problem. B+ measured in the same place (J66 if memory serves) has now dropped to 60v and the picture looks normal.

Parts used: BZX85C18-TAP (18v 1.3w)

Glad to hear your diode swap solved the problem. And since it's now working for you, there's no need to change anything, but I just wish to mention that I used a higher wattage Zener (single Zener) along with a copper heatsink, which you can read about here:

Should you have issues in the future, I recommend you follow what I did, and also do the Beefy Component Upgrade I talk about earlier in that thread too.
