I tried it @fogWraith , on my Mac Plus. Looks and works great!
Hopefully peeps start running servers full of interesting mac files, games, shareware, art and .mod!
It does have some advantages over FTP, makes things a fair bit more entertaining at the same time ... and it's very close to feature-complete :)

if it had version control(somehow) it'd be a nice development tool!
That would be something, but most likely something for both the server side and client side to agree upoin, which is slightly out of scope at this time... for code purposes, I would advice looking towards Amend and AmendHub ;)

The "final" version of Liteline is being released sometime today, as it is finally what I consider "feature complete". Version is being bumped to 1.0 and moving forward I think fixes and tweaks will be the focus area if reports come in.

In other news, the server, Janus, has reached a point where it has received updating capabilities... there is no longer a need to download the full package with every new release. One also gets to read a changelog as well.

The Hermes client is also being retired and replaced with Zephyr, after quite some time of working on this it has reached a point where I feel comfortable enough to have something to present at least in the near future.

For anyone interested, there have been some pretty large updates / changes and additions lately to my server and client (Hermes > Zephyr).

On the client side,
Hermes was retired a ways back and has since been surpassed by Zephyr, moving from a reference client showcasing features to a more proper Hotline client which is macOS (12+) exclusive. While it would be nice to make it cross-platform, I just do not feel like testing on more than one platform.

There are a lot of nifty little features, but I'll leave that to be discovered by potential users... a new version might drop in the near future with a fairly large and interesting feature as well - something nice, niche and ready for discovery.

Overall, a polished and nice experience for any Hotline user coming from the official later clients. And of course, it's available for Intel, ARM and as a universal binary - signed and notarized.

On the server side,
If I haven't mentioned yet, there is now not only voice chat available, but also video and screen sharing, extended privilege bitmap support, ranged download support as well as server linking (ooh, aah). These are but a few of the improvements and something that Zephyr takes full advantage of.

It's not just new fancy features that's in the spotlight either, there have been (where discovered) plenty of security updates made to ease the minds of any operator running the server, which includes myself.

A new version of the server is also coming sometime soon, which combines an earlier project of mine with Hotline. Though the project had been meant as something standalone for VesperNet, it is being realized through the Hotline server instead.

And here it is, the new version of the server is ready and available.

Apart from the minor fixes and adjustments there is the thing mentioned in the previous post - something I had worked on for VesperNet that would be standalone, but found its way into the server code. This is mostly because a lot of components are essentially free on the server side.

Telnet BBS!
So, not only can it serve Hotline users with their newfangled graphical clients, it is also possible to use a telnet (ssh is also available) client, or why not SyncTERM or any other fancy client for that matter? It's there, it works. Standard ASCII and Color support, heck, there's even support for doors. The latter can be written in everyones favourite language, Lua.

Again, the basics are there - chat, good old message board, threaded news discussions, private messaging, online users etc.
Heck, there's even file up/down support, currently ZMODEM, but XMODEM and YMODEM is in the works.

Boop!

that's awesome work @fogWraith
somehow, "it's" all falling into place!

That's exactly right ;)
The new dist package comes with a few examples showcasing some of those features.

There is also some work being done to improve private messaging and server linking with another server developer going on, so there may be yet another update coming soon with some fresh improvements. Apart from that, there is something being ported by myself from when I was working on a new website for the Macintosh Garden that will be showing up with the next update as well.

The latter mentioned has been going on for a while and is almost ready to merge, it'll be something pretty interesting for anyone that runs a server and host a lot of Linux ISOs, or something along those lines. Sadly, it will be macOS exclusive until someone else also adopts it.

bro i'm always hanging out for your updates.
i'll put my hand up to port it to windows 3.x!
The server? That's a rather tall order considering its featureset ;)
I do have libraries with the protocol that gets worked on from time to time however, which could be used to create clients / servers for other operating systems, there is potential for some of the extensions, but not all of them.

Right so, a new version of the client is due "soon", as well as the server once I work the kinks out (another protocol extension)

A teaser for the void;
The client now has the capability of displaying "cards" as well as loading up the "index" - any server can host these, there are no special requirements other than valid "cards".

Until there is a proper release, think of the "index" as an "app store" where the "cards" are entries for things on the Hotline server - a visual representation instead of the file area being filled with anonymous files. This means that something like a path such as "Shareware/Games/Action/Quake" can contain a card (or more) with system requirements, screenshots, versions, sizes, file hashes and so much more.

The only drawback of not having the protocol extension is, that when one loads an index card, it will walk all folders under the index in search for cards (with limitations), though it is fast it can be an annoyance for some server operators who seemingly enjoy staring at server logs, what solves the issue to a higher degree is the protocol extension, which in my case will work against an SQLite database, which in turn unlocks more advanced search / filtering features, user comments and ratings and some other minor things to be excited for.

Naturally, the cards and the index is not limited to software, there is also support for other types of content as well, such as music / albums, books in different kinds of formats, videos (single entries and or series), the index can be written to support either, some or all, and more than one index can be made available for different areas of a server, which makes it fairly versatile.

This fever dream of an addition to Hotline stems from something I was working on when writing a new version of Macintosh Garden, just instead of the web, it's now on Hotline. For anyone wondering, yes, there with be a "card author" guide available in time for the next release along with a small pack of examples for a "complete index" as well as individual indexes - the client will have something juicy built-in for authoring where the extension exists.

Aaaand yes, since the cards are files (export when extension is in use), and the files contain data (never instructions), they can be downloaded by anyone for use on the interweb for instance, parsed as one wills. Such juicy tenderness.

hypercard+hotline=genius!
it's like the web as an app service
so, i can remake eworld with it?
As it so happens, the client is capable of playing stacks (from inside folders and from inside archives themselves), it is incomplete and needs quite a bit of work, especially when it comes to XCMDs and XFCNs - but that's a secret, don't tell anyone ;)

It should be fairly evident in the client (that version is not ready yet) once one gazes upon the preferences and see a dropdown for HyperCard playback speed (and a checkbox to enable / disable TCP/IP support).
