One of my friends from high school reached out to me to ask if I was interested in her old M6498, which she bought new back in 2002. I know this model can boot into OS 9, which makes me want to acquire it (I had bought an A6498 the next year and was really disappointed that it couldn't boot into 9).

I'm not sure how long it has sat since she used it (she's the original owner). Although I do have the A6498 (currently stored at a friend's house in the original box until I free up more space or decide to sell it), I'm not as familiar with these machines as I am the 68Ks. Is there anything I should be looking for on it in terms of components that could fail?

Lucky you! I don't know anything about the inside and what to look out for but I do love these and almost bought one over my G4 tower! I thought I would need to access the internals... I only ever opened it to show off... Which caused the heat-sink to slowly sand my IDE cable just enough to short and cause issues... And that is one long IDE cable... Ever since I have driven an iMac.

The insides of these are pretty straight forward but it is easy to forget reconnecting a cable during reassembly (last time I had one open to swap a fan, I forgot to reconnect the power to the cdrom drive LOL :p. Anyways, the usual maintenance applies with these ie: blow out the case, clean & repaste the cpu heatsink etc. To help with gpu heat dissipation, folks put a 1.5-2mm thick thermal pad on the backside of the gpu sandwiched between the bottom housing and ram/airport access door, so if you experience high heat from the gpu (the big black heatsink on the logicboard), this helps bleed away heat to the base keeping things cooler. If the fan is overly noisy (worn out bearings) or the system is running really hot, you can replace it with a 92mm Noctua NF-a9. They spin up fast and are way quieter. Ive read about folks also using Antec 92mm Smartcool fan because they have a stand alone thermal sensor which kept things cool in that compact design but they are getting hard to find and can be pretty noisy when running at full speed. Anyways, iirc the last fan I replaced I used the Noctua and it works great when I have it on.

Good luck.
