I got everything to install perfectly on s 16 gb usb drive using Mojave, the Apple TV didn't register a 128gb, I installed it correctly and ran the correct terminal commands to make it bootable but when I plug it into Apple TV gen 1 and plug it in the white apple screen with logo appears but then just gets stuck on spinning loading on bottom of screen and does nothing, I even restarted tv using remote menu and down button but same thing, I plugged the usb directly into Apple TV as I don't have a hub I just wanted to see the osx start up screen but it doesn't go past the loading white screen, also I used 10.5.8 v2 when I restore with 10.5.8 image it just keeps restarting on Apple TV logo and does nothing any help here please.
Go back to post 1 and make sure you followed the instructions.

trust me I did I've tried it several times on different Mac OS and Mojave gives me the best outcomes it always works, when I tried on Monterey it said failed but it still worked tho, the drive gets all set up correctly I run the correct terminal commands change the size and start for index 2 even verify that it changes by running the first command again but when I plug the drive into the USB port it boots up to the white Mac logo screen with the spinning booting at the bottom but it just stays there it never boots into the actual setup menu for osx do I need to have a usb hub for it to work it should still boot up into it without the hub I just want to see it. the first usb drive I used was 128 gb and the Apple TV gen 1 didn't even recognize there was a usb attached and just went straight to Apple TV interface, but the 16 gb drive gets to the white Mac logo screen but it just won't get past that I don't know what to do my Apple TV is on version 3 I then restored it back to version 1 but still same thing why won't it get past the buffering spinning thing. I Make sure to download the image torrent version 2 of 10.5.8 then I scan it then I restore image on the mounted disk that I named Apple TV and not on the actual usb drive itself but still nothing so what am I doing wrong I've made sure to follow the directions exactly.

Is your USB drive illuminated (does it have an activity LED)? If not, it is hard to tell if anything is progressing or not. Some thing to note is the requirement of a USB hub. If you look at OCLP on certain macs, a USB hub is required to install/update. It could be possible that the installation is trying to locate a keyboard and mouse.

It looks like @scj312 grabbed the zip file I made with my old Tiger image (from original ATV Hacking, AkwardTV etc. days) and uploaded to the Garden:

https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-x-apple-tv-1st-generation

Which is good, because my old Mega upload is long since scrubbed.
Is there any chance you can reupload the image? i realize this is an old thread so i understand if you say no, but none of these images are Mac OS X Tiger, they are all 10.5 or later.

Interesting. I am pretty sure that #4 on linked page was the image I shared. I later described upgrading my ATV using some iDeneb resources per the old akwardTV forum, but I thought this was a Tiger starting point. I assume from the comments on that page that someone has actually tried #4 and that’s how it earned its description. I will look at my archive and see what I have.

I went ahead and double checked, by restoring it to my Apple TV's HD and it is a 10.5 version.
Thank you for checking the archive, here is hoping you have a 10.4 image in there!
Best.

Yeah, Last night I opened the original zip, mounted the .dmg and checked the version details. By the way, there is an easy way to determine the OS version if you know where to look:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

It was definitely a 10.5.8 or something, NOT a 10.4 tiger image. Sorry about that.

I looked through all of my archives and I cannot find that image anymore. I am going to check some wayback machine possibilities. . .

Ok, so the Wayback Machine was having some issues, down etc. but I did eventually a screenshot of the www.awkwardtv.org page with from Jun 7, 2012 showing content related to ATV OSX with 10.4.7. It’s just a screenshot, so no links to this content, but with some digging (and a functioning wayback machine) maybe there are old resources to find.

What I recall from this period was essentially the results from what is described here:

I think this is still good discussion as it clarifies my original intention to share that long-lost image and that I was admittedly mistaken about the details.

It may also be worth noting that from my experience with that original image—it definitely had issues. There was a very frustrating high-CPU utilization problem way way beyond what you expect from a system with such low hardware specs. I mean, like a runaway process that you could sometimes track in Activity Monitor hitting 100% CPU (if you could get your slow clicks to even launch that!).

There was definitely progress made since that 2007 Apple TV Hacks website entry. I followed a much later tutorial here: https://www.mark-up.com/apple-tv/install-osx/

When I was playing around with this many years ago I archived some of the files. With this later method Tiger worked acceptably except the obvious slowdowns resulting from swapping from the AppleTV's limited memory. My memory may be faulty, but IIRC there were Tiger audio issues. Knowing what we know now about kexts and modding Mac OS X, I suspect any issues like that might be resolved.
