I acquired a second eMate recently, and this one needs a bit more work than the previous one… First, it needs a good clean and has some rust in places…

I'll handle that later, first I had to fix that burnt zener diode that shorts the power input. Likely a protection diode (12V when the input is 7.5V), which served its office when some misinformed user send more than 12V into it.

The one I replaced it with probably can dissipate less but well… At least the short is gone. The power LED lights up green then orange, so there's some life.

More tomorrow.

I got distracted because… because people

Today I cleaned up the bottom case on Dave's stream:

Still needs a lot of work, but I made sure it's working. Just the touch screen doesn't yet, but the screen ribbon needs more cleaning due to spillage.

Let's work on that some more on a live stream:

So, one spring broke after I added the washer. I suppose that washer was a bit too large and so didn't push the spring inside the cavity properly… Or maybe it just needed more grease… I added a smaller washer under that one for good measure.

I got the touch screen working on today's stream:

I torn down the keyboard to clean it up, it's drying now:

Turns out there's a cut trace on the membrane. I tried conductive ink but it didn't work, I'll see tomorrow if it just needed to dry out.

If you want to see if the keyboard got fixed:

So yeah, the conductive ink got somewhat conductive (about 400 ohms, which I find a bit high but well), and it worked.

Re: the hinge repair, hopefully you came across it but the best guide to restoring the hinges is https://inventors-emporium.co.uk/pages/newton-emate-hinge.html

I saw the page the other day, hadn't had the time to read it.

TL;DR recommended washer is 10mm diameter with a 3.4mm hole, with a crease added so that it holds right against the spring legs. Sounds like you got there eventually by adding a smaller washer underneath the larger one.

Yeah, either should work.

Btw, I recapped C93 the other day, so it's in shape to resell it, as I only really need one.
