What I have been doing for a while now - I get what's been happening above - but this App called "FileType.app" is a game changer - if you know the resource codes for it and its so easy - drag and drop then convert. ie. *.sit files which would be stuffit - Create: SIT! and type; SIT5 etc

It has worked very well for me and I have not had any issues afterwards.
