G4 Mirror Door Update-Added SSD, Unable To Install OS9 On SSD

I ran into similar issues this morning, trying to boot os9 off a cloned SSD from Sawtooth into a QuickSilver. For some reason it would not boot os9. I pulled out an original 9.2.2 boot cd and started the QS up, and it only sees the IDE drives, not the drives on the SATA adapater. I am...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 13 Every time I go to Free Geek it is like visiting a no-kill shelter. I find something I have to rescue from the landfill by taking it home. Rescue 1: G4 Quicksilver, noisy fan (scraping on the bent cover, or just need replacement.) Chimes, so further work needed. $10 Rescue 2: G5...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 12 The wicked witch is dead. Yes, both CPUs leaked. Apparently the coolant Apple chose is both corrosive and conductive. Who made that choice? I don't want to throw any more money at it, I saw a dual G5 2.0GHz at FreeGeek last week, maybe they still have it and I can add that one to my...

Poll - Extending the term length of the board

Does the forum not have a function that a moderator can email all members to notify them of the poll? I know I get email notifications on threads I watch.

Day 11 I've lost that lovin' feeling... The G5 PSU arrived today. I delayed dusting things off, so in a rush to clean stuff, I broke off a fan blade... I will see how well Bondic holds it together. I was looking at a video on how to install the bluetooth and wifi, because I saw two antenna...

I picked up another gen 1, so I have a dual 2.5 drive cable on order, going to try the two drive option.

A photo of your exact setup would be helpful. If you are using the stock heatsink with a G4, then simply add a slimline fan to it by screwing the fan onto the heat sink, running it off 12v molex power from a hard drive power cable. Example stock G3? Mount a fan on top if you have the...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Yes, those are the instructions I tried, but every time I click on "save" in iWizzard, it just goes back to where it started and does not save any of my changes. I just wiped the whole drive and i will reinstall Tiger and Leopard later.

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

I can get the partitions created, but the iWizzard does not allow me to change anything on the partitions... I try to change the flags, and hit save, and everything reverts back. I guess I can wipe the whole drive and try MorphOS only, then shrink it and put Tiger and Leopard back on later.

Day 8 Mac Mini Cleanup and exploration. Oh, she's a very dirty girl! Some compressed air cleaned her right up! As mentioned last night, I swapped the mechanical drive for SSD, replaced the optical drive, and upgraded to 1GB of RAM. I then partitioned the SSD for 80GB of Leopard and 40GB...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Yes, the optical drive was faulty. Luckily I had another laying around. I swapped out the spinner drive for solid state, replaced the optical drive, and upgraded it to 1GB of RAM. I could overclock it with the resistors on the bottom of the motherboard, but its not worth it right now.

Picked up a PowerMac G4 MDD with the Zip750 drive!

I made my own 128GB from eBay parts... these work in all my PPC so far (2.5 to 3.5 adapters for the desktops, $4), as well as in the gen 1 Apple TV. 44pin 2.5 IDE to mSATA adapter ($13@) with some refurbished drives Lot of 5 mSATA drives ($40 for 5).

Day 7 This week has been a true PPC joy! Made another trip to FreeGeek Minneapolis. Secured a few more treasures. iSight FireWire, listed as untested, works fine at home, $5 (iChat would not open the camera on PPC, but my FW800->FW400 cable worked on my iMac12,2). Found a Radeon 7000 that...

Day 6 Losing the silicon lottery Attempted some G4 overclocking with jumpers Since the G4-450 is now just laying around, I moved the jumper from R7 to R9, hoping to get it to 500MHz. While that worked and it registered as 500MHz, it had slower benchmark performance compared to when at...

Day 5 I found a dual G5 PSU on eBay for under $25 delivered, so hoping that works out. It should arrive next week. The fuse I cobbled in just blew immediately, photo here: So I headed to FreeGeek Minneapolis to see what kind of treasures I could find.... Since the Sawtooth has a zip drive...

Day 4 Dual G5 Towers today If memory serves me, I once purchased a Dual G5 many years ago and stripped the guts to build a hackintosh. I think I gifted that case to one of my children and then later purchased another empty case. The case I originally gutted had a liquid cooling system, and...

    iMac G4 Appreciation Thread

Check the link under the last picture in the post above, for the full write up and lots more pics. It's actually an iPad screen with Mipi driver board and will do 2048x1536 on a 7.6" screen. The NUC model I used did not have an SD card slot built in, but the front and back IO shields are...

Day 3 Long day at work, 100 mile commute, so not a lot of time to play tonight. Lets try to relax. I have some .avi files, wondering if VLC for ppc will play them. Installed VLC 0.9.10 on 10.4 but they would not play. It may be due to the Rage128 Pro graphics card? Now that my Sawtooth is...

Day 2, a little lighter side.... Picked up a couple original airport cards from craigslist, $12 each local (for the G4 FP 17 800MHz and Sawtooth). A package arrived containing an Airport Express that I got on eBay for $9 delivered (for the G4 FP 15 1GHz USB 2.0). And a little light gaming on...
