Odd Problem With My G4 Mirror Door Mac

Finished my cable, I didn't have orange tape for the 3.3v, so I used white since the white wire will not be used. The motherboard 8pin (2 x 4pin) connector supplies two extra 12v and one ground. So, at least my MDD powers on, where it did not before. Light will come on, then fans go high...

Odd Problem With My G4 Mirror Door Mac

I found a PSU slave cable, from my days of crypto-mining, no longer needed, so I will re-pin it into my own ATX adapter. I have these automotive plug-pin removers, so I just need to figure out which one works best. And I will use some colored electrical tape to keep me sane. Here is my 600W...

Odd Problem With My G4 Mirror Door Mac

I just picked up an ailing MDD with power problem... I have a ATX FLEX 600W psu I will try to fit in, much smaller than the original PSU, so it should fit internally.

    G5 towers, Life After Death

I pulled the rear fan from the dual 1.8 and put it on the air cooled dual 2.5. Ran the ASD for everything but the CPU, that passed. Then ran the CPU tests, passed. Then ran the thermal calibration... did not finish after an hour, assumed it was frozen... restarted and the fans were quieter...

    G5 towers, Life After Death

If you followed January's PPC Challenge, you would have seen me acquire multiple PPC machines, including: -$5 G5 Dual 1.8GHz non booting (it had a V2 and V1 CPU mismatch, no GPU), Free Geek Minneapolis -$10 G5 Dual 2.5GHz non booting (dead PSU, leaking LCS), Free Geek Minneapolis -$10 G5 Quad...

    Ultrasonic Cleaners and ESD

I am not an electrical engineer, nor a professional circuit board repair person, so take it with a grain of salt. In the 40 years of handing all types of electronics with no ESD protection of any kind (I wear socks on carpet a lot), I have only personally experienced one single component...

G5 Quad Liquid Cooling - Question

@epalama1 not sure how far you have gone... just a warning to not go too far on this LCS. If you do NOT have any visible signs of a leak, you may not want to open it. This was my only sign of corrosion, which may be from condensation. My G5 quad does not boot all the way, I can get ASD to...

Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

TL;DR almost double. That was an M.2 drive in a 2.5 sata adpater connected to the dual mPCIE adapter. It really depends on the SATA device. If SSD, almost double. I then tried an mSATA SSD on a SATA adapter. Then I wondered if the mPCIE slot was bootable? swapped drives.... But...

Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

The wifi card slot is mPCIE, which is different than mSATA. They both share the same form factor (like M.2 can be SATA or NVMe), but they are different logically. The reason the dual SATA card works is because of the SATA controller on the board. Mine happens to be the asmedia ASM1061...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 34. The Challenge is over, but I am still going... Ten bucks is ten bucks. Didn't want to wait for a power cord, so got after it with a utility knife. Close enough... may be a fire hazard. Ok, it powers up, but won't boot a cd all the way, strange memory errors... ASD 2.5.8 bombs...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Days too late Free Geek strikes again! I just grabbed a G5 quad core “project” for $10. The tech said it boots then dies. For $10, I just have to try. Unfortunately it did not come with a power cord... I will have to go check my local Goodwill and big box stores, but likely nobody has...

Thank you so much for posting this challenge, TinkerDifferent! I had a blast and learned a lot. I liberated four PPC machines from the Free Geek in the process while expanding my knowledge and skills on PPC machines.

    Managing your collections

I have a excel file with 30+ rows of Hackintosh's and another with 30+ rows of real Apple devices, but the collection keeps growing. I was thinking of trying MAMP and OpenWiki, but it seems way too complicated for what I need. I would like all the details like EveryMac.com, so I can compare...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 28: Continued modem testing I got the two iMac lamps to connect, one worked at 56K and the other only at 38K (OSX), but both successful. OSX Zterm to OS9 Zterm. OSX 10.4.11 to OSX 10.4.11

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 27: Local Dial-Up Test I did a few inquiries on some forums looking for a way to test modems locally without a phone line. Yes, there is some basic circuitry you can build to create a simulated phone line, but you won't have dial tone. I did not want to setup a PBX. There are some other...
