    BlueSCSI on Macintosh Portable

I have BlueSCSI first series installed in my non back lit machine with 5 Mb of RAM. Running 7.5.3. Before I had a SCSI2SD 5.1 and the machine would systematically crash upon waking up from sleep. With the BluesSCSI things are much better, still it occasionally crashes. Can’t observe any pattern...

    HD20 Diagnostics

Honestly I don’t remember, most likely I recapped the PSU, though. The unit I have stutters a bit when I power it up, but then it just works. But I’ve got to admit I’m not using it since a while… Another likely issue is the parking position bumper of the r/w head. They tend to become sticky, due...

    HD20 Diagnostics

In the case of the one I have, the HD struggles to spin once powered up. So, it is recognized, but can’t be mounted. Once it spins, all the rest seems to be OK and the drive can be “used”. Inside there’s a custom Rodime drive. However, apart from the logic board, it seems to me very close to...

    NeXT 400 dpi Laser Printer

I recently refurbished a dead NeXT 400 dpi Laser Printer. First time I deal with laser printers, very fascinating devices, there’s a lot to learn. Anyhow, it’s been a matter of - guess what? - recapping every single board, many small caps were totally busted. Major issue, though, was...

Rescuing data from a Mac Portable HD on another Mac?

My experience is limited to just 2 of those custom Conner drives, both were seemingly spinning and scratching, but unable to be mounted (Portable booting from external HD). Eventually I opened them up for the sake of curiosity and… inside it was a complete jam, with the platter surface totally...

    120GB SSDs in G4 Cube

If I remember correctly, there’s a jumper in the optical drive, too

I would say “master”, “slave” is for the optical drive.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

I honestly have no clue, it goes beyond my knowledge, I would need to study the specifications of the SD card standard.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Amazon, to my eye it looks totally identical to the one sold by Arduino. What is “curious“ is that the original configuration is not seen by BlueSCSI, but works with my camera. If you remove the resistor, the card is seen at start up, but it immediately crashes the system.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

It’s a possibility, I put some cores around, but couldn’t notice any difference. There are still some options to investigate: plain SD to SD Extender, using full size SD. Cable I have was meant for the SCSI2SD, so micro SD to SD, I am using two adapters (full size > micro) at both ends.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

I did some extra trials, I confirm the v2 works fine with HP712, and I also confirm it doesn’t work with the extender cable. Apparently, it does, but you will soon start getting “media error” and that will be it.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

I have the one in the picture and it doesn’t work, unless you take out the pull up resistor. Even in that configuration, though, the installer of the OS crashes reporting read/write issues durino the initialization. Once everything is installed by plugging the card directly in the device...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Additional note. SD Extender is not compatible with BlueSCSI, similarly to SCSI2SD, the card is just not seen at start up. Removing the pull up resistor as reported in a previous entry in this thread is making the card visible to the bios, but then the OS installer invariably crashes during...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

So, eventually I could get BlueSCSI v2 *somehow* working in combination with the HP712 machine. I encountered many issues, sometimes confounded. For confirmation I repeated over and over the same process (fundamentally installation from scratch of both NEXTSTEP and HP/HX, from physical external...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Brief update. I went back to what I knew would work on the HP712, i.e. SCSI2SD. I confirm you need to set the combo 139/4, else the NeXTStep installer will hang. Eventually, I could confirm a working installation of HP UX 10.20 and NeXT Step 3.3 with SCSI2SD. I then moved back to BlueSCSI...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Thanks @eric for the kind reply. As soon as I have time I will try to play with the settings. I confirm that to my experience for the SCSI2SD board in combination with NeXT black hardware, 139 and 4 are the “magic” numbers. Will try to create an account on Discord, too.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Hello Kay, Thanks a lot for your comments and for sharing the 2Gb image, I really appreciate your support. I will try it as soon as possible. I am sure the hardware is ok: it’s beautifully made, you tested it, it works on a Portable, I’m not even taking the trouble of further testing it on my...

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

So, I managed to quickly source a BlueSCSI v2, thanks to the very friendly and effective services of @Kay K.M.Mods. At first, I quickly tested it on a Portable, which runs on a v1 board. Note: I switched from SCSI2SD to BlueSCSI on the Portable, as the SCSI2SD would freeze and crash the...

    Color Classic analog board trouble

I’d be extremely cautious at taking the flir values as absolute ones. Those cameras work magic, but my professional experience is telling me that there are so many variables affecting each reading… Anyhow, surely they highlight extremely high temperature for the hot components, the charred board...
