So you wanna start an SE/30 Reloaded group buy...

Here's my interpretation, based both on the nature of the project and also my gut: The board was designed and released at no cost to the retro community for the benefit of the retro community. Sometimes people release stuff NC so they can protect their own ability to sell the item (commonly seen...

Recommend me some older Mac-centric books

Out of curiosity I've been reading Bob Brant's "Build Your Own Macintosh and Save a Bundle" and found it to be quite interesting. The technical contents aren't exactly remarkable, but it's a great time capsule of what being a Mac owner was like in the late 80s/early 90s. Are there any other...

    Flux residue cleaner recommendations?

I've been finding that ever since I switched to Inventec Amtech flux, isopropyl alcohol just doesn't cut it when trying to remove the residue. I can scrub (and even soak) a board and it'll still be sticky afterwards. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cleaner that will work better? I know...

This is true, but I would have had to do almost as much work had I just produced five boards for myself, and my total out-of-pocket expenditure would have been *much* higher. The economies of scale really came into play with this one.

ROM Clips for securing custom ROM SIMMs in an SE/30

I wouldn't consider the precision required to be "extreme." The first set of clips that came off my Prusa Mini fit just fine using stock settings in the slicer.

Mac SE video output compressed vertically (not tall enough / skipping rows)

As an aside, how does one remove the pins from that connector? I bought a replacement for my own machine, but haven't quite worked out how to release the pins so I can swap it.

Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy PCBs My initial estimates placed the per-board cost, for a run of 50, at around $65 each. Do the math and that's $3,250. I try to run my YouTube channel as a business; that is, I want it to be self-sustaining. So far that's worked out, but $3k was a...

International shipping shenanigans I clicked the button like they asked, and about 3 days later, they were marked as finished and headed towards their shipping center. After another day, the package was picked up by FedEx and on its way to the US. Despite going International Priority, it took...

Parts ordering and the supply chain There's no real bottlenecks or constraints to getting bare PCBs made. Upload the design, pay the money, then a few days later they're done. PCBs are just fiberglass and copper and solder mask, so there hasn't really been much constraint on the supply chain...

You may have seen another thread in which I ran a group buy for a batch of Bolle's SE/30 Reloaded boards. Let's get something out of the way: I am not going to be doing that again. This thread is a deep-dive into what that process was like, and in it, perhaps you'll understand why. But if...

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

Thanks, I got 'em swapped around and now both units are working as they should. While I was at it I desoldered a couple other parts from one of them to help facilitate a custom mod I'm working on... :devilish:

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

I tried both BlueSCSIs on my SE/30 and they did the same thing. I put them under the microscope and...looks like I got the termination resistor packs mixed up 🤦‍♂️

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

So I built a pair of BlueSCSI v1's (why not v2? I have reasons... ;) ) and have a weird problem with both of them. I have a Mac Classic to test them with, but neither will boot. The Mac will boot from its internal mechanical SCSI hard drive, and it'll boot from my external BlueSCSI v1. But...

    Mac Classic screen shake

OK, some digging suggests that there are feedback resistors that can drift over time, so voltage sag makes sense. My question now is...where's the voltage adjustment on this analog board? Not seeing anything obvious other than the video adjustment pots on the back. EDIT: Never mind, found that...

    Mac Classic screen shake

I'm working on a Mac Classic. I recapped the motherboard and it boots and works fine. However, I noticed that the screen image has a weird subtle shake/wobble to it. I haven't seen this sort of thing before, I attached a video clip that illustrates it (watching the menubar is the easiest way to...

ROM Clips for securing custom ROM SIMMs in an SE/30

I'll try to take a crack at these: 1. Shapeways is probably the best-known, but there are plenty of other print-on-demand services out there. Both PCBWay and JLCPCB offer 3D print-on-demand services. Hubs is another one, and before I bought my own printer, I used a previous incarnation of it...

Scratches/scuffs in dark plastic - how to best recover

I've had good luck using magic erasers on Mac cases for scuff marks, as long as you don't go crazy with it there won't be any affect on the plastic's texture.

Dead DayStar Genesis MP CPU card -- ideas?

No shorts on any of the pins -- I examined them all under the microscope. Dark spots are just some flux residue, which I've cleaned up. Looks like it might be a little tarnished, but nothing connects to it (or the pin header next to the card edge connector) from the system. I think it's...
