Interest Poll: Macintosh Portable RAM Cards

At that price, I'd be in for one!

    Color Classic motherboard woes

I'm picking up a project I've been sitting on for some time. I have a Color Classic that doesn't want to boot. When I press the power key, the light will come on and the hard drive/fan will spin up, but there's no chime or image on the CRT. It's definitely not trying to boot because I'm not...

    HDI-30 Part Number?

I suspect there were multiple manufacturers for HDI-30 ports and plugs over the years. I found some reference to Hosiden manufacturing them, though they (perhaps unsurprisingly) don't seem to any more. (Fun fact: it looks like IBM used it on one of its portable PS/2 models!) I've found that...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

For clarity, this 50MHz card was advertised as being *faster* than a IIfx, which was 40MHz. Given that the IIfx was likely better optimized for speed than the IIci was, I'd expect the two to maybe be similar in benchmarks, and interestingly their FPU results are indeed very close. But the CPU...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

I'm running Speedometer 4.0.2. I might try upgrading to System 7.1 next, to see if that makes a difference. Also of note is that the machine has a BlueSCSI v1 installed, but I'd be surprised if that was a factor.

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

I'm testing out a DayStar Universal PowerCache card in my IIci. It's the 50MHz 68030 version, so it *should* be wicked fast. And it's certainly faster than the IIci in stock form, but the benchmarks suggest it's not performing as it should. The IIci has 20MB of RAM and is running System 7.0.1...

    120GB SSDs in G4 Cube

The brand is ORICO, here's the link to that specific deal: https://www.newegg.com/orico-m200-128gb/p/2CR-000K-00004?Item=9SIA1DS9WA5540 I've used ORICO-branded drive enclosures before and they've been fine, but I had no idea they were in the SSD business. For the price it's probably worth the...

Modified metal chassis inside MacEffects SE case?

Yes! Looks like you went without the frame entirely, and I'm noticing now that you also removed the housing for the PSU...this gives me ideas

Modified metal chassis inside MacEffects SE case?

At some point in the past I ran across a photo of someone with a clear MacEffects SE case, who had trimmed the metal chassis to offer a better view of the internal components. Anyone know who this was?

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

All the ones I'm seeing around that $100 mark are the FX-8804. Looks like they also have multiple versions, since they're meant to be used with the FX-888 series. FX880401 is the Japanese 100V part, FX880402 is the North American 120V part, etc. There's also a seller with used FM2202's going for...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

You got me excited until I saw that they're the Japanese 100V version -- not sure I want to risk it on American 120V mains.

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

I absolutely agree with this, and it's why I generally recommend using hot air for desoldering SMD parts. Yes, hot tweezers are the superior method -- and hopefully one day I'll be able to justify buying a set -- but a generic hot air station is an easy purchase given its price. I'd rather see...

    SE/30 RAM Banking QUESTION

There's also an interesting note on page 7 of that PDF: According to this Tech Note, the SE/30 is based on the Mac IIx and uses its ROM. While the Mac II's SIMM size limitations were fixed in the IIx's ROM, I wonder if the SIMM installation order still applies -- that is, smaller SIMMs in Bank...

MicroMac Accelerator card for Color Classic (not working)

It definitely looks like that 68020 should not be there at all, based on this photo of a presumably stock unit. If yours came with one, but the 68030 socket empty, I'd wager that someone removed the 030 from it to swap into a Mac, then took the 020 from that Mac and, for whatever reason, felt...

Picture Documentation of 550c Internals (especially the logic board)?

It is definitely "banzai", I found it in at least two places inside the machine -- on the LCD ribbon cable, and also on the right side of the motherboard (and @Paralel this shot gives a bit of detail of the display connector):

Picture Documentation of 550c Internals (especially the logic board)?

It's been a while since I restored my 550c, but what I remember is that there were really few, if any, major motherboard differences. The internal layout of the machine is the same, as is the processor card connector (the 550c will take, for example, the same PPC upgrade card like the other...

About that white goop in power supplies

When I've seen hot glue used to secure components, it's just been between the components themselves, i.e. sticking two tall caps together. I wouldn't use it to glue parts to a PCB, though I'm also not a fan of gluing parts to PCBs to begin with.

About that white goop in power supplies

Can you post a photo of what you're referring to specifically? There's generally two kinds of "goop" that ends up in power supplies. One is thermal paste, which is usually between transistors and heatsinks. There's nothing special about it, and normal computer thermal paste is fine. The other...

    G4 Cube FireWire issue

Is the bodge on that chip from the factory, or a repair done afterwards? Can't say I've ever seen anything like that before.
