    XServe without a rack?

Ooh! Wallmount is an interesting option! I'll have to look into that for sure when I'm ready.

    XServe without a rack?

Oh man these are both amazing and ridiculous. I've decided I'm not ready to go all-in on a server *yet*, but I'm glad to see that a proper rack mount is not at all necessary.

    Vintage desktop/finder utilities

Hey, gang! I've been using OS9 a lot on my iMac G4, and there are a few interface enhancements that I swear I used to have on my old computers. One was a way to have multiple desktops, similar to the current 'Spaces' features of OSX. Also, I've been using Path Finder on my macs for years now...

    XServe without a rack?

Okay, cool! That's good to know. Though thinking about it a bit more, and I think my space and money would be better served just getting a few more vintage Mac Minis to run alongside the one I already have, and learning how to set those up as a kind of cluster. It would also be kind of hilarious...

    XServe without a rack?

So, I'm totally inexperienced in the server space, but there's an XServe available in my area for what seems like a decent price. My issue is that space is limited, and I'm wondering whether a rack-mounted server like this can be run without a rack to mount it to? Like, could I just set this up...

Video Capture Input for G4 Macs?

Ha! I came across this exact video earlier today when I was trying to find a solution. Unfortunately my iMac works perfectly and I don't want to sacrifice it in order to use it *only* as a monitor, I was just hoping there was a way to have it just switch over to 'monitor mode' when I wanted it...

Video Capture Input for G4 Macs?

Right now I have it dual booting into OS 9.2.2 and OS X Tiger. I'd be happy to downgrade the X side to Leopard, I think it'd run better on this hardware anyway. I'll have to do some research and find out what options there are for sharing the screen from the Linux side. Ideally it'd just be...

Video Capture Input for G4 Macs?

    It's a G4 800MHz so I think it's just the USB 1.1 and FireWire 400: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_800_fp.html

Video Capture Input for G4 Macs?

Yeah, okay - so I'll probably be looking for a series of adapters to get true video capture: MiniHDMI -> HDMI -> ?? -> ?? -> FireWire But is there a way I can just tap directly into the screen of this iMac and use it as an external monitor? The handheld runs Linux, so there might possibly be a...

Video Capture Input for G4 Macs?

Hey gang! Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: I've got a retro gaming handheld that has miniHDMI out so you can plug it into a tv and use it as a game console. I'd like to also be able to plug it into the iMac G4 I've got next to my bed and use that screen to play the games on. I'm trying to...

    Project: Reviving an iMac G4

Today I fixed the droopy screen, following this video's example: I didn't have the tool he used, but I had some needlenose pliers and those worked just fine. The neck did pop apart a little bit and I had a predictably difficult time getting it back together, but I managed! And now I've got a...

    Project: Reviving an iMac G4

Update! Today I replaced the Power Supply and the iMac booted right up. Still had a couple users on it, and me without the passwords. Found instructions for creating a new Admin user via Single User Mode, and I was in business. Learned that it appears the iMac hasn't been used since 2004...

    Good source for used parts?

Went ahead and ordered the power supply I'd found on ebay, it wasn't a bad price really compared to what DV Warehouse had listed as available. Next up I'll need to tighten the neck joints on this guy, what's the tool I'm going to need to open this up?

    Good source for used parts?

Thanks for the tip! They do look like they'll be a good source for future parts, but sadly they don't seem to have what I'm looking for right now.

    Good source for used parts?

Hey gang: I've been looking eBay for a replacement power supply for my 17" iMac G4, but I'm wondering if there's a better place to check for this part. Some online dealer in Mac parts or busted machines?

    Project: Reviving an iMac G4

That's an interesting thought - I was considering looking into what it would take to convert the entire iMac to 12v power anyway, so I could run it off a 12v supply. Do you have links to a good 'modern replacement' power supply that would fit inside the iMac G4's unusual shell?

    Project: Reviving an iMac G4

Thanks for the tips! I'll crack it back open and see what I can find out about the components you mentioned. Any tips for testing the optocoupler with a multimeter? Also, should I be concerned about the resistor I accidentally sparked in my earlier testing?

    Project: Reviving an iMac G4

Tinkering with my project iMac yesterday trying to get the power working, I learned that the PSU lacks continuity on the ground line. As in, I couldn't find the ground pin on the power supply connector when I had everything connected and plugged in. I was testing for continuity by holding one...

Mac SE CRT is way too bright!

So I popped the troubled Mac SE open and fiddled around more with the brightness potentiometer, and got zero response whatsoever. Without removing the analog board completely, I think I'm going to have a hard time diagnosing the problem, but from what I can see it's possible that resistor R26...

    iMac G4 Appreciation Thread

I'll admit, I did not fully appreciate this model when they came out - I was still very much enamored with the Space Egg G3 iMac design. But lately I've realized that at this point in my nostalgia, it's basically everything I want out of a Vintage Mac - a stylish form factor with a lightweight...
