Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Here is v7.2, a month more of tinkering. This adds more debugging, Qp level (showing the current encoding quality) and a live frame counter (mainly showing the 25 fps update rate.) When running the English language mode, "Tint" has been replaced with "Saturation". Hacks relates to jitter...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

It is along these ideas I have been thinking of an out-of-sync detector. The current issue preventing both of these ideas, I don't know which frame is encoded. The camera in Reels runs at 25 fps, all 25 frames are exposed, and processed through the histogram (although I'm processing the preview...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Here is the STL for all five. I'm using the second smallest, as I think the two largest are effectively wide open. I printed with TPU, as might be too tight for a non-flexible filament.

I will find these when I'm back at my workstation later today.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Histogram and extra progressing doesn't start until the third or fourth frame (by design). As if there is jitter, it is there at the first frame. So it is not processing load. I used not even have the histogram running in preview, jitter could happen then also. Nothing appears to impact the...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

The .rbn file is the uncompressed version of the .bin. My hope is one day someone else will also learn how to hack the firmware, and it is easier to start with the larger file.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

As there are others who have updated RODREELSEU models, this is starting to seem like a warranty return issue.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Is this labelled as RODREELSEU? As yours seems to be type C and @Grandson seems to be type B. Kodak has made a complete mess. I don't think DUMPCODE.BIN and UITRON.BIN can be renamed to FWDV280.BIN. I don't know the full procedure to convert this files. Anyone remember?

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

@Grandson did you also try Type A? I think if not Type A the screen with remain blank. Is this the first we have seen RODREELSEU on this thread?

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

@Grandson Try the original firmware from https://mac84.net/8mmlookup/ If that doesn't work, either the unit has failed (return) or model RODREELSEU is something new not covered by Type A, B or C.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I'm only seeing this now in 5% or fewer captures, but maybe I'm lucky. As stated before, it also happens on stock firmware, but it would appear more often with the hacked firmware as it allows for a wider field of view. This is a design flaw, as it appears there is no good sync between the...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Yes the cable (on my unit) was long enough, and it was much easier to mount the lens from the front than the top. Font could be made bigger, but I had to create the font by hand, with some LLM help. So it is not a small task. I'm not sure what scratches the film, I haven't done anything more...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

I love how you have restored the camera cover. You should add some cover for the circuit board, as there is a small amount of light that can leak through the PCB. In very dark images, with a lot of sensor gain, you can see circuit outlines, which is a tad bizarre. I just did my third unit, with...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Some older players are not acknowledging the full range metadata, that is not sharpness, rather an increase in contrast (also a clipped dynamic range.)

Thanks, v3 to v4. Do we know when exFAT broke?

It might nice for someone to determine which version broke playback, like which version broke 64GB card support.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

For more frames we will need to lower the quality. This is not an introduced bug, it is a limitation on the Reels system design. It does not support 64-bit MP4s, required for files over 4GB. As for the other bugs, like broken playback, they are likely due the increased memory needs for...

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

Qp - compression quality - will ramp up over time. Often a tough segment will be at a low Qp (high quality) at the time of the encoder crash. The next capture for the same frames uses a higher Qp, almost always solving the issue.

Modding the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (Firmware Hack)

The random stopping is known, and happens more with the sharper lens. It will most often happen when the scene has a lot of texture and details, for which the new lens reveals more. The encoder is crashing with so much information (it is a crappy encoder from ~2011.) user control, a lower...
