What are your vintage grail items?

If everyone outside Japan stopped buying on Buyee, Yahoo Auction prices might be lower! But thank you, Kay, for all your help. You kindly gave me the advice to buy that 575 & 630. I really appreciate it! You also gave me a lot of advice on the Stereo mod, and I am looking forward to doing...

MacSD - Multi-device SCSI adapter with audio

I'm big on performance when it comes to SCSI to SD solutions, and MacSD is really quite incredible when it comes to that. Plus you get all the other great features too, which is amazing. After my SE Reloaded video series concludes, I intend to revisit MacSD (and the new firmware) and also add...

What are your vintage grail items?

I bought a fully functional L575 (entire computer, with keyboard, mouse and a few CDs) with shipping to my address in Japan on Yahoo Auctions Japan for a total of 9250 Yen in Oct. 2021. Then in Nov. 2021, I purchased a Performa 630, with shipping, for 3960 Yen. (Kay Koba kindly spotted those...

Everything you wanted to know about the BBU, but were afraid to ask...

@Kai Robinson You cited 5 acronyms and said they are consolidated into the BBU (Bob Baily Unit). What do each of those 5 acronyms stand for? BMU, ASG, TSM, TSG, LAG I want to know more, but I'm not afraid to ask. :geek:

Here's a Buyee link of the same Yahoo Auction I referenced in my previous post... https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/u1052451048

What are your vintage grail items?

While looking at that Yahoo Auction page, I scrolled down and spotted an LC575 machine complete with Ethernet card. These aren't grail/rare at all on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but many Color Classic owners THINK they are rare and therefore stick with their painfully slow stock 16MHz 030 board...

Bourns Again - Bourns 601 Series RC Network T-Filters Replacement

@alxlab Thank you for the details. Very interesting that the 200pF capacitance value isn't critically important, as per their use of a rather horrible Z5U dielectric. Since the Bourns datasheet specifies ±30% tolerance, that would mean whoever wants an assembled PCB using your design...

Bourns Again - Bourns 601 Series RC Network T-Filters Replacement

@alxlab Thank you for confirming the importance of the 1mm board thickness. What I've found in a lot of Github projects is that board thickness isn't always specified, but it can be an important consideration for many applications. Who chooses the capacitor dielectric? The BOM doesn't...

@yock1960 You have no stability issues at all running OS 8.1? No random freezes or anything at 49MHz?

Logic Board - Macintosh SE Reloaded

Got a battery bombed SE? Want to have fun assembling a brand new Mac motherboard from scratch? Kai Robinson reverse-engineered the solution. My Part I video shows you how to get started.

Bourns Again - Bourns 601 Series RC Network T-Filters Replacement

What should the PCB thickness be when ordering? 1.6mm? I added the ZIP file of Gerbers into PCBWay and it yields this odd preview: Panel options are these: or

    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

I found this one and this one on EBAY. The second one looks too short, but interestingly, it's the only one that cites Apple compatibility. If you were to stick that flyback in another known-working analog board and if the same cap blows on that too, then it's definitely the flyback.

There is no Spicy-specific mod required. If you want to remove your stock Color Classic motherboard and put in an LC575 board, AKA Mystic, then you either need a special System Enabler (when running System 7.1) or a System file hack (for Systems higher than 7.1), or the VGA mod.

It's easy to make 7.1 run well because several System Control panels and extensions from 7.5 work in 7.1. So 7.1 is mostly compatible with the major apps you want to use. The speed difference is pretty incredible too. System 7.5.5 is a snail compared to 7.1, and 7.6.1 is a tad slower than...

    1987 Macintosh Plus (Platinum)

Where did you source that flyback? Is it really compatible? Did the Wurth cap at C3 pop when you had the stock flyback installed? I ask because C3 connects between +12V and the T1 flyback as follows... Reasons for C3 to pop would be if polarity was reversed across it, or if the voltage was...

Macintosh SE - Discrete logic GLU replacement

Not sure if you've built and tested it since your post in Feb. this year, but the following blurb from the U3 chip's data sheet indicates that either a 0.1uF or 0.01uF or 0.022uF cap would be a very good idea. If U1 is closest to the Vcc pin, then it won't need another decoupling cap. But U2...

To be honest, as I've mentioned before, I've not had the greatest experience with 7.6 or 8.1 at any temperature. 7.1 is rock solid for some reason. I would recommend trying 7.1 on your machine to see if you have the same kind of stability issues. If not, then it's the OS. If so, then it's a...
