Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

Some old articles/websites I had bookmarked regarding the original Apple TV: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2011/08/how-to-put-boxee-or-xbmc-on-your-original-apple-tv/#comments-bar Scott Davilla developed tools: ATV USB Creator Tool ATV Bootloader Crystal HD for OSX Not particularly...

PowerCache Card in IIci -- Why So Slow?

I don't know if it affects your situation, but I'll throw out that the IIfx has faster DRAM access, at least for writes, because it buffers the Write operations immediately to free up the CPU to continue about its business. That wouldn't explain a discrepancy between IIci and SE/30 results...

    Recapping a PowerMac 8600 PSU

Mike had a lot of good articles on his site over the years, which are no longer available. I wonder if he would give permission for them to be hosted here? The forums he ran are probably gone forever. There was so much expertise at the time shared there. Sigh.

    Macintosh IIfx Success Story

Definitely. That was about the same time frame when I lucked into a free IIfx on Craigslist. I needed it for my 16 MB RAM SIMM project at the time, which worked out pretty well. Has anyone ever figured out what the jumpers on the IIfx logic board do? As far as I can tell, the computer...

    IIci with no SCSI

Could also be an oxidized/dirty SCSI connector and unplugging/plugging things cleaned it off enough to start working. We've seen a few folks here have SCSI problems caused just by the connector being old and using something like de-oxit fixed it up.

    120GB SSDs in G4 Cube

Sorry about that. I meant to include the link in the original posting, but it looks like TDNC covered it. I'm not sure why you would for a Cube, but if you want something larger, there's a KingSpec 1TB mSATA for ~$60 until 04/06...

    120GB SSDs in G4 Cube

Orico (edited) brand 128MB MSATA SSD on sale at Newegg for $10 through 4/01/23. I've never tried it myself. Limit 1 to customer. This adapter is pricey, but has an actual jumper for setting Master/Slave/CS: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017VQT5YW/?coliid=I1MVZPP46HRRUG For adapters which...

USB / FireWire PCI combo card for a Power Mac 6400 ?

I was away for a while. The 6400/6500 actually isn't my specialty. The above referenced thread is probably the best reference. I did extensive testing of PCI-PCI Bridges in the Umax S900 clone and can talk about the problems and exceptions at length, but that's not very helpful to someone...

Programming the Cypress CY2292F Clock Generator?

Just following up for the sake of completeness... The Cypress Cypress CY3670 programmer with CY3095 adapter showed up on Ebay for $25 + shipping. Needless to say, I bought it immediately. I haven't tested it yet though. It looks pristine, although the pins for one of the sockets got...

Where to buy 8-way Mini-DIN plug to connect to serial port

You might also check (IIRC) Phoenix Connectors. I don't have the link available at the moment and may be mis-remembering the name, but Google will probably get you there. Later Edit: This posting https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/macintosh-connector-part-numbers.135/ lists the...

How much of the 128K/512K hardware has been reverse engineered?

My 13-year-old water heater just (late Dec.) blew its drain valve clean out. Happily, the garage drains well. Temporarily took out the adjacent furnace the day before temperatures plunged to 15 degress F. Looking at my records, the previous water heater lasted about 13 years also. I think...

The Apple RTC has finally been reverse engineered!

Thank you for that, @Kai Robinson While reading Part 1 I kept wondering why the author and his predecessor didn't use the Serial pins on the ATTiny. Heh, then I read Part 2. :)

My PowerMac 7100/80 AV Recap Project

You can use 100 uF/10V which is pretty commonly available and removes the uncertainty about 6V vs. 6.3V.

Need some component values for 6100/66

I keep a box of modeling clay in a zip lock bag next to my soldering station because of the type of problem you had. The same thing happened to me the first time I used hot air to desolder. Now days, I roll little snakes of modeling clay and press them on rows of surrounding components that...

How much of the 128K/512K hardware has been reverse engineered?

72-pin SIMM on 128K <=> Plus doesn't make as much sense as on SE/30, because memory usage on the 128K/Plus is only 16 bits wide and 72 pin SIMM is 32 bits wide. It would make more sense to just populate with fewer, higher density chips, assuming the refresh circuitry is compatible. Four 2M X...

Found a Neat Mod From Back in The Day in My 128k

You had the ceramic package 68000 on your 512K? The ceramic package is flatter than the plastic package and doesn't fit the Killy clip properly.

Found a Neat Mod From Back in The Day in My 128k

Newlife/NewBridge had a 128KE/512KE upgrade board with eight (8) SIMM sockets on board and a plethora of jumpers for configuring the RAM configuration. The RAM limit was still 4MB, but if one had a bunch of 256K SIMMs laying around, one could use those in the upgrade. And the Mac's memory...

How much of the 128K/512K hardware has been reverse engineered?

I think the issue is that it is not a proper replacement for the Mac II family, but I think Kai knows with more confidence. Above, max1zzz stated that the D1307 was a replacement for the clock in the Mac II family (unless I misunderstood) and that is what triggered the flurry. D1307 looks...

Mod: Quadra 660AV 2 MB VRAM Upgrade

Perhaps put plated vias in the pads, so if they fail to make connection, you can solder down the hole? It reduces your pad to pad area but provides a more reliable method of insuring solder contact.

How much of the 128K/512K hardware has been reverse engineered?

Hmmm. Looks like the DS1388 might work as a replacement -- at least feature-wise. I haven't checked the command structure. It would probably require a GLUE chip in between to translate.
