Recommend me some older Mac-centric books

I really like How Macs Work. Lots of great illustrations and a clear explanations. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2626041-how-macs-work?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=shmkWSBvZO&rank=1 There was even a revision for later-90's things...

Jump starting an Apple Network Server

Correction: the pins to jump for power on are 1 and 5.

Jump starting an Apple Network Server

I've been triaging a new-to-me Apple Network Server 700. Initially it'd boot okay but its hard drive was dead. It sat for a day while I found a boot CD for it and then just wouldn't power on. At best it'd have an initial blip of power but then power off in less than a second. I figured it was...

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

@Tony359 that's a good tip. Thanks The Swyft card takes over the ROM and stops spinning the drive if nothing is inserted. If something is inserted it goes into normal IIe mode and boots the disk.

Apple Performa Plus 14-inch Display power switch issue and workaround

This is a mediocre display, but was common to pair with Performa's of its day. It's a Philips C3G9179 shadow mask CRT/Analog board with an Apple badged enclosure and 15-pin connector. It only operates at 640x480. The display I found worked okay, but its power button quickly broke. It'd press in...

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

Swapping the ROMs and trying the drives on another working IIe had the same symptom --- oof. I tried two more drives and one of them worked. So my previously known-good drives were no longer good o_O One of the original drives started working after I re-seated its 3470. I swapped in a...

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

Another update: I swapped the ROMs and tried another known-working PSU and the issue persisted. Next I'm going to swap the whole logic board.

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

A little progress update: This IIe came with a Swyft card. This card disables the built-in ROM to do its own thing. But when installed in slot 3, it would prevent the computer from booting. I cleaned its socketed ICs and it successfully booted. When it did, the (empty) disk drive would only...

    Simasimac Help Please!

From that description it sounds to me like you have a continuity issue that clears up after warmup. Something needs cleaning and/or reflowing IMO.

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

Control reset does stop the drive motor and light. Yes the head does the track 0 chatter. PSU looks good. Dead on voltage rails with no drives attached. The 12V rail drops to like 11.7 when the drive is attached and motor is continuously running.

Apple IIe disk drive lights and spins continuously

I have a IIe whose disk 1 will light up and spin indefinitely whether a disk is inserted or not. From some googling it looks like it can commonly be due be an issue with the disk controller card or analog board on the drive itself. I swap tested with two other known working drives and a known...

    Simasimac Help Please!

Can you explain that a bit more? What specifically is happening at cold boot and how does it change after warmup? The lined pattern you're seeing is the default state of the VRAM and it looks consistent. So the VRAM is almost certainly okay. You more likely have a continuity or contention issue...

Apple II Astec Power Supply AA11040B low voltage repair

I got an Apple IIe recently with no power. Here's a quick account of what was needed to get it working in case it's helpful to others. The system was loaded with a bunch of expansion cards. Those were all removed, but still no beep. The power LED on the MLB would sometimes pulse and the PSU...

    7100 name badge removal

There is a hole on the back side. I'd use a hair drier to warm up the badge from the rear and as blunt of a tool possible to poke through that hole to push the badge off.

    Macintosh LCIII start up failure

Can you share some good photos of your logic board? Even if you're not seeing obvious signs, the caps may have leaked onto other components, causing a short. Replacing them alone might not solve your problem. You might have to clean the board thoroughly and potentially repair broken traces...

    Replacement display screw caps?

I've been experimenting with reproducing the various rubber bits from PowerBooks lately. Here's what I've found to work pretty well so far: Print a positive in resin Let the resin positive off-gas several days. Coat the resin positive in clear enamel (spray paint) Create a silicone (platinum...

GOTCHAS when buying a Macintosh Portable?

I have several Portables and have helped some friends with others. Here are some things that I've dealt with. I've had a couple with multiple stuck or dead lines on the screen. I tried cleaning the zebra connector but that didn't help and I wasn't able to find a way to fix them. I haven't seen...

Mac Classic Analog Board repair help

Have you recapped the logic board? It's common on this model for the SMD caps near the EGRET (ADB controller) to leak around that chip and prevent soft power from working. If that happened you'll need to recap and clean the heck out of that area. Some times you need to completely remove the...
