I got a message back from siliconinsider saying the thin board of the SIMMs is a know issue with the SE/30s dodgy slots and suggested that a number of people have had success by using kapton tape on the back of the SIMMs as a shim to tighten the connection to the slot. I will give it a go.

I filled all 8 slots and they seemed a little loose so I printed out the RAM SIM clips and put them on which seemed to hold them tighter in the slots. ( There is one slot clip broken) but as I said the simms seemed OK with the clips in place. And I diid put the old ram back in after to retest it...
