Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

The mPCIe Quad SATA card arrived. Installed and tested with two drives attached (I will post screenshots later), it worked out of the box, no driver or kext needed. Proceeding with the lift kit, I have to figure out where to relocate the fan, maybe make a exhaust port left of the dual eSATA...

Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

My next hack/mod will be trying a Mini-PCIE quad SATA adapter. If it works with all 4 drives, then I will 3D print a 1/2" riser so I can mount two internal 2.5 drives and have two eSATA ports on the back.

Converting An 80-gig External To A 250 gig SSD-Need Advice

Even though the external case is still functional, you would be better off leaving the existing drive in it. It is likely PATA to USB 1.1, which really limits the speed/throughput. Adding another PATA to SATA adapter with an SSD is not really going to improve speed. Now that you have a USB...

Converting An 80-gig External To A 250 gig SSD-Need Advice

It should. But first I have to ask, what is the interface on the external drive connecting it to the computer? If USB, then it may be easier/cheaper to just buy and external case already designed for a SATA drive. Example on Amazon, USB 3 and backward compatible with 2.0 and 1.1

Issues with OS install on PowerBook 165c

Do you have to the option to connect your original drive and the BlueSCSIv2 to the same computer and just clone the drive? I am no expert soldering guru myself, but the closeup of the BlueSCSI appears to have very inconsistent solder joints between the Raspberry Pi and the BlueSCSI board (some...

    May 2024 finds

The last find for May 2024: Dual Intel 2.0GHz (quad core) MacPro1,1 from Free Geek for $10. I have another MacPro2,1 that is flaky as well, so maybe together I can piece one good one, and one donor case for a Hackintosh motherboard. Still organizing and moving things around, but cleaning...

Dumb Question: I Need To Get A PCI USB Card For My G4 MDD, But...

33 MHz 64-bit PCI slots, not PCIE which are most modern products. If you can find a modern one in non-PCIE, it might be a crap shoot whether it works or not. I found several generic PCI cards at my local Free Geek, and they worked fine in the Graphite AGP and Quicksilver. If you can get...

    Hi from Minnesota

Welcome! I have been frequenting Free Geek almost weekly now, rescuing old mac projects when they are available and within my budget. A lot of macs passed through my hands as well, and I didn't really consider myself a collector of sorts, until 2023.

Best hardware for setting up NetInstalls?

They have older versions that likely run on older server OS. DeployStudio Server 1.5.17 THIS IS THE LAST BUILD COMPATIBLE WITH MAC OS X 10.5. earliest version I could find on WayBack Machine is 1.0rc134

Best hardware for setting up NetInstalls?

Try DeployStudio? I used this when I worked for a public school system back in 2009-2012. Use the wayback machine for documentation.

    What is this??

Earliest I can find on Wayback Machine is 1998, products for early PPC machines. So my guess would be a TV tuner card for Pre-G3 machines, like 7100/8100? Look at the back of this 6500, looks like a tuner card similar, though I am unfamiliar with the slot connector internally. Another back...

    What ZIF is this?

Are there any resources out there with all the makes/model of G3/G4 ZIF processors? I just bought a B&W tower with 350MHz processor, and it went to 400 fine in OS9 and 10.2, but when I took it to 450, os9 was fine but osx did not boot (as expected). I bought a cheap ZIF on eBay that the seller...

Making a crutch for a 23" Studio Display

I have the other end of this problem (hinge replacement). My hinge is fine, but my acrylic kickstand is broken. Not much left to hold on to I removed the excess to make room for a metal shim so the screws can hold on tightly. I used some flat sheet aluminum and a bench vise to bend it. I...
