eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

@Andy Today I tried to sync the eMate with a few versions of OSX. After several attempts I saw that the battery indicator was getting low so I am plugging it into power. That’s nine days of standby and occasional use for troubleshooting. It’s not a good test of typical usage but it at least...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Ok. I wish I had the programming experience to help. I did wonder, however why I wouldn’t at least see something using “cu“ at the command line. I guess I don’t have any of the details about the docking protocol, so not sure what I was expecting—probably not “eMate here trying to dock. . .” but...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

It's Monday, and I have been trying to get the eMate to dock with my M1 Mac Mini. I bet I have tried the connection attempt via serial about 30-40 times after various troubleshooting steps. None have worked so far, but I wanted to update you about the battery. The bar has moved to about halfway...

Connecting eMate to Mac OSX - "there was no response"

Some of you may have been following my eMate restoration thread which has been mostly routine, I think. Today, I am trying to make a serial connection to my modern macintosh (M1 Mac Mini running Sonoma 14.6.1. Naturally, I downloaded Newton Connection Version 3.0.2 (67). I don't have any...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Well, it's midday Sunday, and the eMate has been on battery power since Friday morning. The battery indicator is still showing the full bar of power. I see no change in the available power. Of course, it's not like I am using the eMate all day--not even close. But, throughout the day I open it...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

I will add that you could probably get away with vinyl electrical tape to hold the pack together. It won't be as smooth--heck, even I didn't have big shrinkwrap--but if you keep tape layers to a minimum it should easily slide back into the plastic case with the clips, and there's plenty of room...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Hey, thanks for following along. . . Great question. I would absolutely do this again and you have even a little skill with the soldering iron this is pretty simple. I would suggest getting tabbed NiMH cells unless you have a battery spot welder. I considered getting one of those mini ones...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Battery pack rebuilt with new NiMH cells: Tested cell voltages to see that they all add up in the end, and checked resistance across the thermistor. I think we are good. Using cells with tabs made this rebuild almost trivial thanks to the simple design of the spring clips and slip-in package...

eMate BEEPS but does not start up—SOLVED

Thanks. I just installed the memory upgrade module and we have the beeping again. I wonder if the beeping was the module all along. There was a point after I first completed the hinge/display cable work when I had initially installed the memory upgrade. Perhaps the eMate was fine all along...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Not sure what fixed it, but reassembly led to either my not waiting long enough for a reset, or something wasn’t seated correct. It might have been the plunger switch, maybe mainboard out of alignment—whatever the case was, I appreciate input on another thread. At this point, I have more...

eMate BEEPS but does not start up—SOLVED

Well, I am not exactly sure what did it, but I have the eMate working! After the above notes, I decided to give my work a once-over, just shy of taking apart the display. My goal was to conclusively verify the display plunger/switch was working and to verify my power source. After unbuttoning...

eMate BEEPS but does not start up—SOLVED

It was/is assembled yes. The reset button has a tactile action I can feel when pressed. I did not hear any ”brrrraaang” sound I reinstalled the nubbin as pictured, but I will double check that it is still there.

    List of LocalTalk games?

Please add “Avara”, the excellent Ambrosia title that features polygon 3D mech battles! https://macintoshgarden.org/games/avara Avara has modern retro ports now too, but the original mac game used round-robin networking via Appletalk or TCP/IP

eMate BEEPS but does not start up—SOLVED

I am documenting my eMate restoration in another thread. Here, I am posting my first real troubleshooting problem. 1. Reassembled eMate with new display ribbon cable from Androda 2. Battery disconnected. 3. Using a real Apple Newton 7.5v 9W power supply 4. Plugging in power supply, eMate starts...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

It turns out that little nub that was jammed into the pen holder was actually the back tip of the stylus itself! Who knew? I thought my stylus was complete, but I guess there is a little seam at the end. I can glue it back together, but this is one mystery solved. With the hinges rebuilt, I...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Adding a brief update. . . Packages received: Newton/eMate power adapter Androda’s replacement display cable and memory upgrade module NiMH cells for battery rebuild I still need to figure out a sync cable solution. So, today I finally installed the rebuilt hinges—or at least screwed them...

eMate 300 Restoration progress—My notes and your advice

Regarding the battery, I already ordered and received my replacement MiMH cells (with tabs) so I will be doing the battery rebuild soon. A few house projects got in the way progress on this, but I will be adding more notes over the next few weeks. Thanks for all of the input.
