PowerBook 165 restoration: Tips for getting started?

What is the actual state of the hinge screw boss fixtures? If they're more or less solid, then a coating of super glue might be enough to add some needed strength. But if they're crumbling, best to go whole hog and install the 3D mounts. I've done the rebuild using various epoxies on various...

    Mac Plus J8 part number?

Looks like that part number suggests a 6 position header, J8 is 11 position. I don't know the original manufacturer or part number... if you don't have a parts board to snag one from, something like the Molex 0022112112 - a single-wall friction lock 11-position header - looks like it would work...

    Flux residue cleaner recommendations?

I don't use Amtech myself so I can't speak from experience with this, but have you tried something like MG Chemicals' Flux Remover?

    Good first Apple II?

Very exciting - Apple II Forever! Check out this thread for inexpensive modern storage options, including some Smartport / SD projects (check the other threads linked in this thread): https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/most-affordable-floppy-alternative-for-apple.2910/ If you indeed have the...

    Replacement display screw caps?

Blender. Super simple little model. I can share the stl, with the caveat that it's probably crap. I'm not sure what you mean about the flexing. It seems to me that whole area is pretty stable, no? Since everything at that site is kept in place by the screw. I'm not an engineer though, so...

    Replacement display screw caps?

I did a quick and dirty model/print just using some grey PLA I had on hand... A softer material would of course be better because it's just a friction fit, but as a temporary solution (and with a little sand / paint) it would be passable. Original on left, print on right (in both images)

Powerbook 160 Screen contrast wont hold

That's probably a correct reading --- I just checked sliders from a rev b display inverter board I have in a box here, which is different, but comparable for this purpose (157k sliders, read 35Ω to 10kΩ inline). I assume both sliders read the same on yours? Still, if you're able to swap in...

Powerbook 160 Screen contrast wont hold

It's possible I suppose the contrast slider itself is bad. Do you have another PB you could swap in the inverter board from? Any one from a 140/145/145b/165/180 will work.

    Replacement display screw caps?

Hm... I didn't think of using TPU, I've never printed with it, but this might be a good opportunity!

    Replacement display screw caps?

I'm wondering if anyone has found or manufactured a decent replacement for the two rubber (?) caps for the display housing screws? I'm missing a couple, and others have turned into playdough. Possibly something could be made with silicone?

    The NABU computer

Also as someone who owns one... I think what you get out of it is going to be more directly connected to what you put into it than you would find with any other vintage platform... even if you take advantage of modern floppy controller and mass storage solutions (if you're not super keen on...

    Powerbook 180 ressurection attempts help!

Sorry for the late reply, I was away all weekend. You should be able to test / run the system with the diode removed as it's merely there as a means of protection... you should test the diode out of circuit anyway to be sure you're not getting a false result due to a short to ground elsewhere...

    Powerbook 180 ressurection attempts help!

A couple things I'd check quickly: 1. the fuse F1 down by the battery terminals (though I don't think it would cause components to heat up?) 2. there's a zener diode on the reverse side, right under those IC's - D15 = if it's shorted it gets hot ... seems to happen quite a lot. I'd also suggest...

Support for PPP in The Old Net WiFi modem

I have no idea lol, I have zero experience with RPi's --- but if you're really stuck then I guess it's worth a shot. What about friends, family, local maker/hacker space? Yeah not sure, but possibly it's too old. I keep an old Windows 7 machine on hand for these kinds of things, got it free...

Support for PPP in The Old Net WiFi modem

Odd for sure. Do you have another computer around (at work / school even) you could try this on? The latest OS I can check with here is Big Sur (M1 MBP), and the ESP appears as 'usbmodem52980017771' in Terminal, and is the only option to choose in esphome-flasher. And - I hesitate to ask, but...

Support for PPP in The Old Net WiFi modem

Same - most TCP/IP traffic (FTP transfer in particular for me) is useless atm - slow, flakey, even at slower baud rates. The firmware clearly needs some work Maybe I'm misunderstanding the issue, but I'm not having any issues in the regard? Dialing 777 in the client just works (FreePPP...

    Good first Apple II?

Here's an auction to keep an eye on... comes with ROM 4X installed already and a boot disk and ADT Pro disk. It's also a stamped label 4000, so *could* be ALPS - no guarantee...

    Good first Apple II?

If you're keen on the IIc, note that there are two models - the AS4000 and AS4100... AS4100's all have ALPS keyboard switches, and *most* of the AS4000's have significantly crappier keyboards (using a kind of metal clip for tactility)... some AS4000's though have the ALPS switches, and I believe...
