    Macintosh IIfx Restoration Thread

I wanted to share this beauty I picked up last night. You already know it's battery bombed (aren't they all). Here are some photos for fun. It came with a display card, networking card, and RAM of unknown capacity. I figured I'd share my progress here in the hopes that it's entertaining and...

"Budget" conscious Trinocular Microscope & Fume Extraction

Here's my idea of "fume extraction". Thankfully these past few days have been warm enough where I can open windows and leverage a cross-breeze as well. The mask is a must though. Can't smell anything with it on, and it filters organic vapors and particulate matter!

Breaking my SE/30 out of JAIL!

Exciting update to share tonight - found the culprit. One of the address lines from the ROM was not connected to the ASC. I didn't want to remove the entire chip, so I ran a bodge on the bottom side of the board from the ROM SIMM pin to the via connected to the right pin on the ASC. When I had...

Breaking my SE/30 out of JAIL!

Apologies for the click bait title... I couldn't resist! Needless to say I'm working on a troublesome SE/30 which appears to be in "jail". When I first received this board it did boot to a cursor and flashing disk, which makes this all the more frustrating. Thinking it would be simple, I did the...

Low-cost 3 MB RAM card for Macintosh Classic

Exciting updates this evening! @Zane Kaminski's revised board design is up and running well. System boots and operates normally. The card also fits perfectly in the chassis. If anyone has any specific tests or benchmarks they'd like to see performed, I'm happy to run them.

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

As was suspected, the L88M chip runs very hot. During benchmarking in my 575, ~3 seconds was the longest I could rest my finger on the surface. I also have a 1994 68040RC33M and the stock 1993 68LC040RC33 I tested. During benchmarking, I could rest my finger for ~8 seconds before these became...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

Interesting! So something like the below image would be indicative of a later revision chip? I wonder if the above evidence is enough to go back to the seller and question the authenticity. It's a fine line between giving away everything we know about fakes versus obscuring it and simply...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

Thank you for the information! To be honest I haven't tested the processor yet, but if I understand correctly, it would show up as 25MHz in my Q700 and 33MHz in my LC575? Who knows if it even has an FPU! I wish we had a tool to determine "rated" speed. I suppose heat output could be used to...

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

I recently bought one of these chips from an eBay seller out of China as an "experiment" I guess you could say. I took a couple of photos from my microscope to show some differences between a known genuine XC versus this questionable MC chip. I scrubbed the top of the MC chip with IPA, and none...

    Mac Classic No Drive Troubleshooting

If the hard drive is known good and has been tested in your working SE, I would think it's still a power issue (especially if you hear the drive losing speed). Your SCSI chip could be defective as well, but I don't know how likely that is. Do you have any external SCSI drives you could test the...

    Post your desk!

Here's my "lab" space for WIP type stuff. My wife is very understanding of this hobby and allows my mess in this room of the house, but I have to admit sometimes I've been guilty of spilling out into other rooms!

MacBook Pro 15" 2012, shuts down randomly, or black screen on startup

The U8900 fix (when properly executed) works wonders on video issues for the 2012/early 2013 15" retina. However, you appear to have a A1286 model. To my knowledge these did not have the same issues as the thin retina machines from that era. As was mentioned, the 2011 models had actual GPU...

BlueSCSI - Open, Low Cost, DIY SCSI to SD device

Is there an updated BOM anywhere for the 1.1 DB25 or desktop? I see this, but I don't think it reflects the latest hardware revision.

"Platinum" PLA for Macs and Apple ][s

I can already imagine the many uses people could get from a filament that's the correct color. OEM looking "Mystic" I/O covers, new badges, feet, etc. I wonder what the costs would be to create a "PowerBook Gray" version as well. I have bought gray filament in the past only to realize it looks...

PowerBook 1400 Series CD-ROM Module Repair

I'm wondering if Teac (who manufactured the drive) also designed that bezel, or if that was an Apple part which was mated to the 3rd party CD drive. I think a 3D printed reinforcement bracket seems like a very good option! So far the superglue has worked to hold the eject latch together, but...

iBook G3 is the teardown from Hell - stripped screw

At this point drilling it out may be your only option. Once the case is off there may be enough of the threads exposed to grip it with pliers and totally remove it. I feel your pain having dealt with a stripped brass standoff inside a case very recently!

Low-cost 3 MB RAM card for Macintosh Classic

I hate to disappoint, but I am not the legend behind "Garrett's Workshop"... we just share the same name with the same spelling!

PowerBook 1400 Series CD-ROM Module Repair

I did some disassembly this evening and found the culprit. The latch responsible for closure and eject was cracked in half. I am going to try superglue as a first stab at it, but if that doesn't work I'll model something to 3D print. After the glue dries overnight, I'll post some results!

Low-cost 3 MB RAM card for Macintosh Classic

My $0.02 - the OEM expansion card was much taller and heavier than what you've designed, and likely needed the rails on the chassis for support due to the torque that could have potentially been exerted on the motherboard connector. With your design I wouldn't be concerned with utilization of...

PowerBook 1400 Series CD-ROM Module Repair

I have a CD-ROM expansion module with a strange issue. It will only read discs if I hold the mechanism in place and press into the laptop. If I release, the disc spins down and unmount from the OS. Ejecting also only works if I release my hold on the door right as I hear the click of the latch...
