    Macintosh IIci Logicboard recreation

Beautiful! And this one has cutouts for mounting tabs 😉

Freshly Recapped Portable - RAM Faults

I’ve been sitting on one too many Portables needing a recap. Yesterday I decided to get moving and actually complete one. Apart from these boards sucking a TON of heat from my iron, the job was straightforward. Keep in mind I did not test this board before the recap as to not cause damage to...

Color Classic Flyback Replacement from LC5xx

Yesterday I decided to open up a Color Classic I’ve had on the bench for a while. My Post-It note said that the analog board was inside, but the caps were removed… cool! I opened it up and got to replacing them. Strangely, I noticed some flux residue and fresh solder on the leads of the flyback...

Oh hey, it's another dead IIsi power supply thread

I’ve also had many frustrations with the Sony IIsi units, although my issues were different than yours. Most of the time I have the problem of them remaining “on” and not powering down. My recent discovery for that problem was a very thorough cleaning in IPA. Seems the conductive cap juice...

    Advice on Mac SE/30 RAM

You don’t need an aftermarket ROM if you’re using mode 32. Another thing- RAM must be installed in sets of four (see attachment). I personally have never installed more than 20MB in an SE/30, but can see the appeal of doing more from a “wow” standpoint. Eight 4MB modules would be a good balance...

Max HD size on PowerBook 180 (100 series) ?

What is in that ini file? The PowerBook shouldn't require one (not sure if that's causing your problems or not). Maybe try removing it?

    Flux residue cleaner recommendations?

Looks like I misremembered what I bought - here is the TDS for what I have:

    Flux residue cleaner recommendations?

I have used the MG flux remover in my ultrasonic cleaner, and the results were...underwhelming. Maybe my concentration was too low, but I'd save your $ and go a different route.

BlueSCSI v2 Pico - Low cost, open hardware, fast SCSI device!

Posting this here for those looking for a mount that brings the 50 pin connector to nearly the same position as an OEM hard drive. It won't work in the compact Macs, as they require side mounting screws. Tested to work in devices where the original drive screws in from the bottom. Also including...

Mac Classic Analog Board repair help

Some may disagree, but I'd start with just the ones Bruce has marked in the guide. I'm confident you'll get it going again!

Mac Classic Analog Board repair help

I hate to break it to you, but it looks like the caps you installed were put in backwards. Check the silk screening on the board, and note the "+" sign. That must be opposite to the (-) you see on the capacitor. If I were you I would replace with new, and not try reusing the ones you have...

IIcx, IIci, Q700 (and more) Stealth Power Supply

My DigiKey order containing the resistors and transistors has arrived, so I focused a little more time on building the power supply. I started by taking apart the Seasonic. Pretty easy - just a few screws and the board was out. I did have to desolder the AC input lines. Once the new Seasonic...

IIci cache card - three tone chime

If I remember I'll pull out the card and test it again after work. From what I recall, the IIci would happy chime, then just hang (never displaying any video). With the card removed, all was back to normal. I think a card that gives a death chime may be indicative of some bad RAM on the card...

    iMac to Headless Mac

It's not too hard to fix this issue. Apple decided to use a plastic bar to support the spring force of the hinge, and to no one's surprise it frequently breaks. The person in this guide used a metal plate. When I did mine a few years back, I just found a couple large washers to support the ends...

Macintosh IIci - No chime or video after recapping. Any ideas?

Hi Steve, I'm fighting almost the same problem: https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/another-iici-thread-no-video.2730/ I'll let you know if I solve anything on my end. My board does chime, but all other symptoms you mentioned are happening with this one as well.

SE/30 - Video Faults, Horizontal Bars, Vertical Lines

All surface-mounted capacitors have been replaced (I prefer the aluminum electrolytics). My next course of action will be to test the address/data lines to the VIAs. I have spent most of my time around the ASC to try and get sound working, but all connections have been restored. Time to...

Another IIci Thread - No Video!

I think you're right as far as the startup circuit is concerned, I should remove UE13, UB13, and UD13 to deep clean under them. Some sort of short keeping the signal line at +5V would cause it to continually try and power up. I've had different luck thankfully. Using a real old SyncMaster 171N...

SE/30 - Video Faults, Horizontal Bars, Vertical Lines

Small update - the vertical black lines are gone! Now I'm back to the standard simasimac pattern (for this brand VRAM happens to be the horizonal black/white bars). UE8 was missing two connections to the VRAM which was causing the vertical stripes. In my probing, I also found a handful of...

IIcx, IIci, Q700 (and more) Stealth Power Supply

As promised, I'm starting a thread for my tinkering with upgrading the internals of the well-known and somewhat hated power supplies for the Mac II/Quadra 650/700 desktops. Like many of you, I have a few of these that are dead as a doornail. For the rebuild, I've ordered three 300W Seasonic...
