Grid 1 REVIEW — iPhone 2G Wall Art

Yeah, they're no good as phones anymore, but with a bit of work jailbreaking & unlocking them, you can easily sideload old apps and games onto them. With a battery replacement (which mine really needed), they end up as great devices for early iOS games. The legacy iOS community is pretty small...

Grid 1 REVIEW — iPhone 2G Wall Art

Forgive me for not quite understanding these types of things, but wouldn't the good condition shell and outer parts go to better use to fix up a beat up 2G instead of sitting unused on a wall? Especially since the 2Gs get scratched up so easily. Yes, they look really cool, but it just feels like...

How to only load desktop files from the boot partition?

I just got my 3400c set up with a 4 OS quad-boot of Mac OS 7.6.1, 8.1, 8.5, and 9.1. The problem is that each OS loads all of the desktop files from each partition. Is there any way to make it only load the file from the partition it’s booted off of?

What are your vintage grail items?

Recap, recap recap! You've got it working now, but if you don't change the caps it won't be for long! I'm assuming you've also removed the battery of course.

    PowerBook 165c

The display caps should be through-holes on this model. They can leak and replacing them is never a bad idea, but it isn’t mission critical like the surface mount ones are. Techknight did a restoration video on one of these recently, here’s like link: EDIT: Figured I'd add that his inverter...

    PowerBook 100 Sad Mac 0000000E 0000FF00 Fix

From what we're seeing in newer systems from the late 90s (which are now as old as SE/30s from the 80s were when they started to leak), they do still end up failing sometimes, but less often, and they seem to dry out and not leak. Certain types still do leak though, the original Xbox's CMOS...

    PowerBook 3400c!

Quick update on the batteries: All 4 work! Battery #1 is the weakest of them all, it seems to go for around 30/40 minutes. I've done a proper life test on batteries 3 and 4. Battery 3 ran for nearly 3 hours, and Battery 4 ran for about 2 and a half! I haven't done a proper test on #2 yet, but it...

Transfer files from PowerBook G3 Pismo to PowerBook 190cs

+1 on PCMCIA to CF, working great on my PowerBook 5300c, 1400c, 3400c, and G3. No reason why it wouldn't also work on a 190. The one I have looks like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165288290985?hash=item267bf32aa9:g:8CUAAOSwjhhh5ZKS Not sure if that's the same listing, but that type of card...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

Thanks for clarifying! Interesting that the portable LCD doesn’t have this issue as much. What makes it different? You don’t hear about Portables with this issue. Techknight has one with the problem, but that’s the only example I know of. Not sure if his affected display is a backlit or non...

Backlit or non-backlit, or are they the same, just one having a tube?

    Tunnel vision on PB170

techknight on the 68k forums probably knows, he's a total expert on the Portable. I'll go ahead and post an update on the 68k crosspost thread.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I've seen that list, and you can see that the 170 and 180 both use Hosiden panels. It would be interesting to see the manufacturer of the Duo 280 and 540 displays, but both of those systems (especially the grayscale 540) are pretty rare. Same with PC laptops that have the problem. Is it mainly a...

I Wonder what the manufacturer on the Duo 280 and PB 540 is.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

On a slight tangent here, I was wondering about something like this for Maxell batteries. Apple used around 5 different battery brands, and while they can all leak, the Maxells are so much worse. If we know for example (this is completely made up), that a Macintosh IIci assembled at the US...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I would imagine that if one model was not affected we would know by now. It's all of the monochrome and grayscale active matrix displays, including those found in PC laptops.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

Good points, I’d be glad to check my manufacture date/region if you do find that it is labeled. My backlight is super white, much more so than other 170s appear in photos. CCFL backlights usually turn yellow with use though, not over time. Mine is probably just a low hour system.

How were the PowerBook 1xx bags?

My PowerBook 170 came with a pretty fitting bag. It has absolutely zero branding whatsoever on it, but it's well built and has space for accessories. I can also take some pictures later.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

If the problem is due to adhesive failure, why would some displays not be affected? If we look at other functions on these computers that degrade, such as rubber parts that go all melted and sticky, it happens to just about all of them. While most 170s and 180s have the problem, many (including...

    PowerBook 3400c!

Varta doesn’t make them anymore, but you can get aftermarket packs on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Synergy-Digital-Battery-Compatible-02664E/dp/B094NTM26 It‘s not quite the same form factor, but you could squeeze it in somewhere I’m sure. It’s also 40 mAh instead of 50, not sure if that would...
