Molar Mac (Power Macintosh G3) Upgrades!

Any old IDE DVD drive should work, or a SATA drive if you install a SATA card. As for installing a SATA card, you need one with a certain chipset that's been flashed to work on these old Macs. Not sure exactly what because I haven't done it myself, but I know that's necessary.

PowerBook 170 - speaker dead after taking it apart

No luck. Sound comes out fine with the audio jack, but not on the speaker still. Connection into it feels strong, and I've never even used it anyway, so there isn't really anything that I could have broken. To be clear, the speaker has been working ever since I got it. It only quit after a...

Proper handling of laptop batteries in vintage machines

Anything Ni-Cad or NiMH should be removed if storing for any longer than a week I'd say (if dead). Check the PRAM/CMOS batteries as well as @Androda said. The PowerBook 150, 2400 and 3400 series all use Varta NiMH PRAM batteries that leak and wreck whatever they're attached to (usually the logic...

PowerBook 170 - speaker dead after taking it apart

I had my 170 apart today to take the hard drive out to test something in another computer. When I got it back together I suddenly have no sound through the speaker. I don't remember for sure, but I'm pretty certain I did power it up today during the part shuffle with it working. Here's what...

Molar Mac (Power Macintosh G3) Upgrades!

I'm sure that someone with the skill to replace the CPU would also be able to fashion a bigger heat sink on, IIRC there is enough space inside the shell for one.

Molar Mac (Power Macintosh G3) Upgrades!

Sure, that's definitely a skill I'd love to learn someday. I wonder if it's possible to solder a G4 into a Kanga.

Molar Mac (Power Macintosh G3) Upgrades!

Yeah, that's what I thought. I believe 3rd party upgrade makers released G4 daughtercards for them. Not sure about the molar specifically, but other PM G3s and G4s.

Isn't the Molar Mac's CPU socketed?

Molar Mac (Power Macintosh G3) Upgrades!

Plenty of choices. CD drive can be replaced with a DVD drive, SATA card, FireWire/USB card. Lots of stuff to do! You can never have enough upgrades.

    Tunnel vision on PB170

Sorry, forgot to post an update on that. Yes, indeed it does! It begins around 20 minutes after it starts running, an interestingly it’s the inverted kind, so you can actually still see stuff in the affected areas.

Adobe Illustrator - Latest RENT FREE version for Tiger?

Internet activation started with CS2 actually, but since the activation servers for CS2 through 4 shut down it appears that Adobe released internet-free versions that have since been uploaded to archive sites.

Adobe Illustrator - Latest RENT FREE version for Tiger?

With CS2, CS3 and CS4 I've never had to take the system offline. It's always just worked fine, not sure why when everyone says to disable internet before installing.

Adobe Illustrator - Latest RENT FREE version for Tiger?

CS4 didn’t officially support G4s (although it will run I believe) and CS3 wouldn’t run well at all on a 466, CS2 would definitely work better. It’s available on the garden as well as archive.org https://archive.org/details/adobe-creative-suite-2 I believe there is a standalone Illustrator CS2...

    Tunnel vision on PB170

I’ll have another test subject coming in next week - I just bought a grayscale PowerBook 540 off of eBay. It supposedly works so we’ll see whether it has Tunnel Vision or not.

Massive Vintage Apple Haul in Idaho

That's so cool, great find! That 840av is likely worth a good bit of cash working, they are considered to be the fastest of the 68k Macs as far as I'm aware.

Looking for flex cables to recreate

I recently got around to removing the damaged cable from my 5300ce display, and it appears only 3 or 4 traces have been damaged by the tear. It would probably be fixable but I would need someone with an intact cable to do some continuity testing. It's pretty complicated as well, so I'm pretty...

    The 17" WUXGA PowerBook G4

Well, finding a 15" compatible panel shouldn't be an issue anymore because I just got an example of the 17" variant of the DLSD in from Mercari today! Even though the stock display is really nice already, I'm really temped to go for the upgrade anyway. I'll have to look at a disassembly guide...
