I'm delighted this work is being done and I appreciate you doing it, though I'm a little torn about this. While it's entirely possible Apple was working with a modified NT4 for the ANS, it is more likely they ran real NT4 with extra files provided separately.
The MaciNTosh project does it the way it likely would have shipped, using a separate media to load VENEER and kickstart NT and then provide the HAL and required drivers (which that project does via a RAM disk available to the installer). That project uses a CD for this mostly because the initial supported machines didn't have a floppy. A period NT 4.0 install for Shiner (or any PPC Mac) would use the stock NT 4.0 PPC CD with a boot floppy and a driver floppy just like a stock x86 install would have.

@PappaDF Thank you for the latest info! I'm going to get started with the project here again soon with all the new work and share the tool data on real hardware.

I also agree that we should probably try to stay with an unmodified cd and continue with a modified HAL and VENEER.exe

Ok, I doubled back to start testing again but using the default 4.0 cd. Then start putting all the pieces needed on a floppy trying to emulate a real setup.

@PappaDF Just to confirm, what cd version are you using? I might have picked windows NT 4.0 server when you were using workstation? But I wanted to confirm.

this is where I'm at right now with that setup.

Yes, I picked:

OEM 000-48303 (October 1996) Workstation release.
md5sum nt-4.0-ppc.iso
# ab37556d72818ed082c1d01c2d7f1898

see https://github.com/pappadf/powermac-nt-hal/wiki/Emulator-Media-you-must-supply
Thanks PappaDF, I'm using the same CD

We have progressed to video now. I'm now making all edits to the floppy and the CD is now default ISO.

Code:
HAL: IoReadPartitionTable: no MBR signature (00000000 00000000)
HAL: IoReadPartitionTable: 0 partitions, signature 00000000
HAL: SRBTRACE7 BULK adapter ee518de8 path 00000000 target 000000ff lun 000000ff status 0000000e
HAL: SRBTRACE7 BULK adapter ee518de8 path 00000000 target 000000ff lun 000000ff status 0000000e

Sounds excellent! This is on real hardware, right?

I've reworked my experimental branch to use the floppy + unmodified CD approach as well (I've pushed all updates to that branch). It almost works fully in the emulator.

Making progress!!!

Your notes have really helped make these new breakthroughs @PappaDF !!!

Past Video issues
Past Keyboard Issues
Past initial OS boot issues.

Now I'm here

Code:
Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMHardware Profile/Last Known Good menu
VrOpen: Exit - FileId: 2 IHandle: ff8d3d80
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows NT
Setup using the original Setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
Program complete - please reboot. ff8d3c00
EXIT called ok0

Terrific!

This is on real hardware right? Very impressive! Getting it running on hardware is always a much bigger challenge than in an emulator.

I as mentioned, I have transformed my emulator experiments (https://github.com/pappadf/powermac-nt-hal/tree/pappadf-experiments) to work with a floppy+cd combo as well, and it's now on par with the previous cd-patch-variant, i.e. it more or less works end-to-end:

See example here: https://youtu.be/E61rIaY2BjY (it's a very lengthy recording with a lot of time spent at OF prompts)

The error is trying to load the main SYSTEM hive of the registry. Are the other parts of the kernel loading?

OK, here is my first draft of the Mac OS Extensions pack. I am now pretty certain I can't boot the internal SCSI with the onboard ndrv alone, but I think the video, Ethernet and startup fixer components are solid. You'll need a 1.1.20.1 ROM for this.

I'm currently thinking of a way to use a PCI SCSI card as a secondary controller, set to a different ID, and boot from that. After all, if the RAID card can do it ...

Yeah, seems like my dreams of being able to just boot Mac OS is a bit of a fetch haha!

Linked is my archive page for it, one drive doesn't work, I think, still tryna work on it, the other was read by my PC, and I was able to turn it into an ISO, but honestly have no idea really how to view the data...hopefully one of y'all smart cats can figure it out n lmk if there's anything cool!

It came from Texas, presumably where it lived it's entire life, I purchased it off eBay a while ago, and now I feel as though I have highjacked the post haha.
I looked into the HDD-dump a bit (the iso file) and there is a lot of stuff in there that was not deleted when the partition was reformatted.
Many Photoshop images (8BIM header), Apple internal HTML-files (golden-web?) and such.
Also Lotus Domino references, Mac OS 8.6, Games and random fragments like this:

A lot of stuff will be damaged since the files were likely partly overwritten.
But there may be much more interesting files in the disk-image.
