Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

@techknight has received the cable now, so it's up to his timeframe to move the connector over and give it a shot.

Looking for flex cables to recreate

Flex cables in the Atari Portfolio (hinge), PowerBooks (display, SCSI), and many other systems are wearing out, cracking, and becoming unusable. I'm looking for dead flex cables to recreate, basically. There's no guarantee that all possible designs can be recreated, given connector...

Possibility of complete redesign and modern manufacture of LC-LC475 power supplies

It's been way too long since posting a status update here, sorry. The design which uses a power supply that provides 12/5/-5 directly (no down-converters) isn't going to be very affordable. These power supplies have spiked in cost and are near-unavailable due to the parts shortage. We'd be...

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

Figured out the cause of the -5 volt rail being -6 volts. Counterfeit or bad chips, the whole lot of them. Set up a test circuit on a breadboard, tested about 20 of the chips from my supplier, and none of them were even close. The original circuit hangs the -5 generator off the battery...

    Recreating Macintosh Portable Hybrid Module

In keeping with my latest string of recreations, here's another one. I am working on recreating the 'hybrid module' from the non-backlit macintosh portable because these tend to die and do stupid things thanks to capacitor fluid damage or the coating cracking off of the high precision...

    Androda's Finds

Recently picked up a flock of nine compact macs along with seven keyboards. Five Mac Plus One SE One SE/30 (battery bomb, boo) One Classic (also battery bomb) One Classic II (somehow not bombed, survived the dreaded red maxell) Haven't investigated the Pluses. According to the previous owner...

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

Production is complete on the cables, and they are currently being shipped to me. Hope to have them by the end of the week, and then can ship them out to my testers.

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

Glad your portable is working again. The capacitors have been replaced, right? In other news, I just placed an order for a prototype set of 5 of these recreation cables. Chinese New Year is still going on, so it'll probably be some time until production and shipping. Two cables have been...

Possibility of complete redesign and modern manufacture of LC-LC475 power supplies

Currently we're waiting on a second revision protection PCB to be made. I forgot to include the revision in my last order, which means this new revision is probably going to be waiting through Chinese New Year. The order is in, 75% completion, and the new year just started. Previous PCB was...

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

The test PCB arrived, and we have success: connector footprint matches nicely. I'll be doing final checks on the cable design over the next few days, and will place an order for a set of 5. Then the design can be tested, and hopefully it works.

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

I have ordered a test PCB (not flex) which is the through-hole connector end of the cable, to verify that the footprint is correct. Once that arrives and is verified, I'll do one last check of dimensions and pads for the ribbon cable ends and submit for a prototype run of these cables. Also of...

Possibility of complete redesign and modern manufacture of LC-LC475 power supplies

The origin of this project was the mAcTX_LC which was released into the public domain on 68kmla. I downloaded the files and made one, but was frustrated that the use of a picopsu wasn't enough by itself, because the picopsu doesn't provide -5v. These files were lost in one of 68kmla's many...

Apple eMate 300 Expansion Module (Open Source / Open Hardware Project)

I'd love to be making and selling these, but there are some problems. Only one of the 10 modules I assembled was functional from a flash storage perspective. On most of them, the DRAM works - but the flash for some reason just isn't having it. Some possibilities come to mind: * The PCB design...

    DEC Rainbow PC100

As for the breaker popping instantly, the presumption is a short to ground. With everything unplugged (not plugged into the motherboard either), use your multimeter on resistance mode (or beeper mode if it has that) to check in the power supply for shorts to ground from the output voltage...

Possibility of complete redesign and modern manufacture of LC-LC475 power supplies

Looks like I need to do a small protection PCB revision. My solution for connecting to the selected power supply is to sit down over the output pins and solder in place. That connector footprint was off by a tiny bit and scrapes the side of the mounting bracket. Moved that, rotated a few...

    Multimeter recommendations: auto-ranging?

I've had very good luck with the "Aneng" brand multimeters. Models 8008 and 9002. The 8008 was even reviewed by the EEVBlog, decent little meter. Note that I don't think they're trustworthy for high voltages due to lack of protection that you see in nicer meters. But for low voltage...

Possibility of complete redesign and modern manufacture of LC-LC475 power supplies

Did a test on the latest design (using my LC II), and everything seems to be working. At this point the mounting bracket is probably the final target for some tweaks before this is ready to go.

Astec LCII PSU connector to the logic board

The Molex 26-03-4070 is the exact connector end you need, and the Molex 45570-3052 are the crimp contact ends.

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

Yes, the connector is through-hole on the backlit portable display cable. So it could be semi-easy to do with desoldering braid. Next step for me on this project is to measure the original connector and try to find something that matches the pin pitch. If I can find one of those, then...

Recreating Backlit Macintosh Portable Display Flex Cables

On the subject of recreation display cables, I just pushed the flex cable design for the backlit screen upgrade into my PCB Designs repo on GitHub. Note that you need connectors and the ROM slot card for this to work. This is *not* the 5126 backlit cable, this is the upgrade for the 5120.
