Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Are the two serial ports *supposed* to behave the same? It looks like they're wired slightly differently, although I'm not sure what all the chips they pass through do. Anyways, since I'm still having issues under both 6.0.8 and 7.0.1, it sounds like the serial port is probably not the issue...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Hmm, yeah, the printer port doesn't seem to work - it says the port is "busy". I checked the traces everywhere I could, but didn't find anything.

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Oooh, I reread it now and now I see what you mean - I had swapped 8530 (RS422) with 5380 (SCSI) in my head, haha. I had checked that site before but it's less complete for the SE. Fortunately as far as I can tell the SE & SE/30 have the same setup for serial, seems easy enough to follow. By the...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Thanks! That sounds like a quick and easy thing to check. Do you have a resource that shows the pin/connection labels/numbers? I can't seem to find a good schematic online for it. And I assume a simple continuity check with a multimeter should be sufficient, right?

    Adding a CRT toggle switch

Dumb question - can you just turn the brightness knob all the way down? When I do that on my SE it looks like it's completely off.

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

I've posted this over on 68kMLA to get some more eyes on it - https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/macintosh-se-frequent-crashes.40098/#post-433500 There I got the suggestion that it might be a PSU issue, and/or I might need to recap.

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

I've replaced the memory, and I *think* that's helped things, but things are still weird. I was able to fully boot System 7 pretty consistently, even 7.5, along with playing some games that wouldn't run before. However, there's still a few instances of crashing, and oftentimes when I reboot, the...

    Macintosh HD20 issues

My understanding is that the HD20 uses a drive that was only used in that model and is not compatible with other drives.

Apple Two Page Display - NuBus Card Required?

It looks like it uses a different connector - you'll probably need this video card https://lowendmac.com/1989/macintosh-two-page-monochrome-video-card/

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Thanks, turns out they're really easy to come by so I just ordered some on eBay. Only ordered 2 since I imagine it would be pretty unlucky for 3+ of the sticks to be the culprit, lol

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Update: I opened it up and, unfortunately, it's the early SE model that uses soldered resistors to set the RAM amount (not jumpers). I don't really want to so a bunch of soldering right now, but I tried swapping around the RAM sticks to see if that did anything. It didn't really seem to do...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

I've seen this mentioned before, as LIDO not working with the Mac Plus and only working with the SE FDHD and later. But... I have no idea what that means lol. LIDO is a way of formatting drives right? Since I was having the same issues when booting from a System 7 folder on my internal HD, I'm...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

I've used the different System 7 images here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/rascsi-68kmla-edition And here (the System 6 on this image boots fine, switching to System 7 does not) https://mega.nz/folder/8hA3AQCJ#pWUq92L70yDXlogy9lk5Dg/folder/E1BlRa7B I also used an image that @Drake sent to...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

RAM was my first guess based on how this sort of issue works on modern machines (random errors, freezing with garbled image/sound). There’s 4x1MB in there. What’s the minimum that will let System 7 boot? Also, does the SE need a certain number of sticks at once or can it do one at a time? Kai -...

Macintosh SE Won't Boot System 7

Hi all, I'm trying to boot System 7 from my Macintosh SE (800k). However, each time I try to, either from a system folder on the internal drive or off a premade image on my BlueSCSI, some sort of error appears. I've attached an assortment of the errors I've seen. I've tried System 7, 7.1, and...

    2010 MacBook Pro 13" - Dead Backlight

Thanks, I've considered the LVDS cable before but didn't know about the backlight driver. Looks like the backlight driver would be really hard to replace, the LVDS cable would be rough but still doable. Do you know if there's certain behavior that's more characteristic of one or the other?

    2010 MacBook Pro 13" - Dead Backlight

Hi all, I've got a 2010 MacBook Pro that works mostly well, except the display has a bad backlight. When I first got it a few years ago it would work on and off, but now it doesn't seem to work at all. The screen itself displays a picture just fine, which you can see if you hold a flashlight up...

    Operational Cost Overview [2023]

What's the plan for funding? Is it currently funded out of the admins' pockets, or is there a Patreon/other way to make donations? I personally would be happy to send some money to keep this site going.

    A Couple Japanese ADB Keyboards

Hi all, I got two Japanese Apple Keyboard IIs from Buyee. They were sold as "junk" because they couldn't test them, but fortunately my bet paid off and they're both working! There are just a couple of things I wanted to ask about: One of the keyboards has a few numpad keys that aren't working -...

Mac Classic ROM chip - replacement or more troubleshooting? SOLVED

From my understanding, the checkerboard pattern does indeed indicate a bad ROM. I haven't seen standalone ROMs for the Classic listed anywhere, but as you said you should be able to burn an EEPROM and fit in in there. I think he had to do some custom wiring to make the pins line up but I...
